Hydrogel oxygen reservoirs increase functional integration of neural stem cell grafts by meeting metabolic demands

Y. Wang et al.

Summary: Injectable biomimetic hydrogels have been developed to solve the problem of oxygen shortage following neural stem cell transplantation. The hybrid myoglobin:peptide hydrogel can deliver stem cells and oxygen to the brain, supporting engraftment until vascularisation occurs naturally. The addition of myoglobin to the hydrogel enhances cell differentiation and promotes functional integration, which is crucial for neuronal replacement strategies. This approach has the potential to improve the treatment of neural injuries and diseases.

Using UV-Responsive Nanoparticles to Provide In Situ Control of Growth Factor Delivery and a More Constant Release Profile from a Hydrogel Environment

Kiara Bruggeman et al.

Summary: Nanoparticles are commonly used as delivery vehicles for drugs, but their diffusion often leads to inconsistent drug release. In this study, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is attached to photoactive titanium dioxide nanoparticles and loaded into a nanofibrous self-assembling peptide (SAP) hydrogel. By manipulating UV exposure conditions, the researchers were able to achieve a more constant and flattened drug release profile. The adsorption of the growth factor onto the hydrogel nanofibers and the interaction between the released growth factor and the hydrogel were found to affect the drug release. This study demonstrates the potential for precise control of drug release by manipulating the amount of bound growth factor on the nanoparticles and provides insights into the diffusion and release behavior of nanoparticles in hydrogels.
