Probiotic potential of Lactobacillus isolated from horses and its therapeutic effect on DSS-induced colitis in mice

Songkang Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, four isolates of Lactobacillus with probiotic potential were isolated from the fresh feces of healthy male adult horses. Their biological characteristics were analyzed and they showed tolerance to acid, bile salt concentration, and simulated artificial gastrointestinal fluid. They also exhibited antibacterial and antioxidant activities. One isolate, Lactobacillus plantarum A3, was able to reduce symptoms of ulcerative colitis in mice, suggesting it could be a potential treatment for IBD.
