Biodiesel production from microalgae Dunaliella tertiolecta: a study on economic feasibility on large-scale cultivation systems

Akash Patel et al.

Summary: Microalgae have attracted worldwide attention as a potential biofuel feedstock, but economic feasibility is a limiting factor for commercialization. This study found that using natural seawater and unproductive land for large-scale production can significantly reduce operational costs and improve economic benefits. Efficient resource utilization, multiple products and co-products with market linkages, and appropriate policy support are key factors for the commercial viability of microalgae biodiesel production.

Process evaluation and techno-economic analysis of biodiesel production from marine macroalgae Codium tomentosum

Kalavathy Gengiah et al.

Summary: This study used seaweed Codium tomentosum as a source for biodiesel production and achieved maximum oil recovery through ultrasound-assisted pretreatment. The transesterification of extracted oil using a solid-solid nanocatalyst resulted in a maximum biodiesel conversion rate of 90.5%. Techno-economic analysis indicated a positive investment return for biodiesel production.

Multi-criteria analysis of detoxification alternatives: Techno-economic and socio-environmental assessment

Tamara Llano et al.

Summary: The study identified feasible detoxification alternatives by considering various criteria such as inhibitors removal, phenolics removal, acetic acid removal, lignosulfonates removal, total sugar losses, fixed capital invested, manufacturing costs, waste toxicity, social acceptance, and employment. Anionic resins were found to be the best technical solution, overliming the most economical alternative, and overliming also scored highest from a socio-environmental perspective. Additionally, three spent liquor biorefinery models were proposed based on the inhibitor's concentration affecting fermentation yields and productivity.

Techno-economic and environmental assessment of novel biorefinery designs for sequential extraction of high-value biomolecules from brown macroalgae Laminaria digitata, Fucus vesiculosus, and Saccharina latissima

Xueqian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study contributes to the sustainable development of blue growth in Europe by investigating the economic viability and environmental sustainability of three conceptual macroalgal biorefinery systems. The improved technology scenarios show promising economic potentials for these systems, with industrial scale systems obtaining significant net present values over a 15-year project span. Feedstock costs, sales of products, and energy use are key factors affecting the economic and environmental performance of the biorefinery systems.
