High-cut harvesting of maize stover and genotype choice can provide improved feed for ruminants and stubble for conservation agriculture

Mesfin Dejene et al.

Summary: The study found that cutting maize stover at a higher stubble height can improve feed quality for ruminants, with the upper stover fractions having higher nutritional quality than the lower fractions. This management change combined with appropriate genotypes can provide higher-quality feed while leaving stubble for conservation agriculture.

Ferulic Acid Esterase Producing Lactobacillus johnsonii from Goat Feces as Corn Silage Inoculants

Estefania Andrada et al.

Summary: In this study, three FAE+ L. johnsonii strains were isolated and compared as silage inoculants. The results showed that L. johnsonii ETC187 had better inoculant and probiotic abilities. Although L. johnsonii ETC187 significantly reduced ADF, L. johnsonii ETC150 and CRL1446 not only induced similar ADF reduction, but also reduced dry matter loss.

Corn stover usage and farm profit for sustainable dairy farming in China

Yuan He et al.

Summary: This study found that the optimal ratio of whole plant corn silage to corn stover silage to maximize dairy farm profit increases as milk production levels decrease. High producing cows can increase the amount of corn available for other purposes at a fixed total milk production. At the optimal ratio, methane emission intensity is smaller and milk nitrogen efficiency is greater for high producing cows.

Effects of Ferulic Acid Esterase-Producing Lactic Acid Bacteria and Storage Temperature on the Fermentation Quality, In Vitro Digestibility and Phenolic Acid Extraction Yields of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) Silage

Yixiao Xie et al.

Summary: Two lactic acid bacteria strains, LF18 and LP23, with different ferulic acid esterase activities were isolated and studied for their effects on sorghum silage fermentation quality, digestibility, and phenolic acid extraction yields at 20, 30, and 40 degrees C. The inoculants significantly improved lactic acid contents and reduced NH3-N contents at all three temperatures. While neither LP23 nor LF18 significantly improved digestibility, LP23 showed higher phenolic acid extraction yields at 30 degrees C, and LF18 and control groups had improved yields at 40 degrees C. The FAE-producing LABs could potentially ameliorate negative effects of high temperature and improve fermentation quality of sorghum silage.

Corn silage quality index: An index combining milk yield, silage nutritional and fermentation parameters

R. M. H. Tharangani et al.

Summary: The development of a corn silage quality index (CSQI) based on multiple quality parameters can provide guidance for assessing overall corn silage quality. The study found that a minimum number of quality parameters, including digestible NDF, starch, crude protein, ether extract, ammonia, and lactic acid, can be used to develop the CSQI. The CSQI was found to be positively correlated with milk yield measurements and was more accurate for predicting performance compared to other existing methods.

New epiphytic strains of lactic acid bacteria improve the conservation of corn silage harvested at late maturity

Daviane Martinele Costa et al.

Summary: Evaluation of lactic acid bacteria strains isolated from corn silages showed that certain strains can effectively reduce dry matter loss and improve aerobic stability of silage, especially L. farraginis CCMA1362 which demonstrated significant reduction in yeast numbers. Further studies are needed to assess the efficiency of these strains under field conditions.
