Technologies for municipal solid waste management: Current status, challenges, and future perspectives

Shamshad Khan et al.

Summary: This study found that MSW generation is increasing in provinces such as Shandong, Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Fujian, but declining in other eastern coastal cities, provinces, and special zones. Municipal solid waste in China is mainly treated using landfill, incineration, and composting techniques, with significantly lower usage efficiency than in developed countries. The effectiveness of China's municipal waste management system needs to be improved.

Performance Evaluation of Pressurized Anaerobic Digestion (PDA) of Raw Compost Leachate

Alessio Siciliano et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is a beneficial solution for treating organic waste and wastewater. Pressurized anaerobic digestion can generate high-quality biogas with low CO2 content, but high pressures may have negative impacts on the digestion process. This study investigated the performance of pressurized anaerobic digestion for raw compost leachate for the first time.

Enhancement of Anaerobic Digestion of Waste-Activated Sludge by Conductive Materials under High Volatile Fatty Acids-to-Alkalinity Ratios

Paolo S. Calabro et al.

Summary: The study suggests that adding conductive materials such as granular activated carbon (GAC) and aluminum can effectively improve the digestion efficiency of waste-activated sludge (WAS), while the use of steel powder and zero-valent iron is not effective. Under high volatile fatty acids-to-alkalinity ratios, reactors modified with GAC and aluminum show the highest methane yields.

Operational parameters influenced on biogas production in zeolite/anaerobic baffled reactor for compost leachate treatment

Meghdad Pirsaheb et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of OLR on biogas production using an anaerobic baffled reactor, with zeolite as a medium to reduce inhibitors for anaerobic microorganisms. The results showed that with increasing OLR, the biogas production increased, while the alkalinity and pH values remained optimal. The presence of ammonia did not adversely affect biogas production.

Improvement of Biomethane Production from Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) through Alkaline Hydrogen Peroxide (AHP) Pretreatment

Alessio Siciliano et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) oxidation as a pretreatment for organic waste, showing that AHP can enhance the anaerobic biodegradability of waste by converting complex organic substances into easily degradable compounds, leading to improved methane production performance during biofuel production processes.
