Ionic-Liquid Induced Morphology Tuning of PEDOT:PSS for High-Performance Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Xihu Wu et al.

Summary: Research focuses on improving the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS films in OECTs to achieve high transconductance. By using ionic liquids as additives, an optimal morphology is realized, enhancing ion accessibility, lowering gate bias, and enabling high transconductance, fast transient response, all at a lower gate bias window.

Photopatternable solid electrolyte for integrable organic electrochemical transistors: operation and hysteresis

Anton Weissbach et al.

Summary: Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have attracted attention for bioelectronic applications due to their mixed conductivity and stability in electrolytic environments. A photopatternable solid electrolyte based on the ionic liquid [EMIM][EtSO4] in a polymer matrix is presented, allowing for the fabrication of high-performance OECTs with minimal leakage current and device crosstalk. The stability of OECT operation in different atmospheres and the controllability of hysteresis in transfer characteristics are investigated.

Chi-Yuan Yang et al.

Summary: The article discusses the development of low-power, high-gain flexible circuits based on printed complementary OECTs, which leverage the low threshold voltage of OECTs to detect voltage signals as low as 100 μV with high gain. These complementary voltage amplifiers demonstrate high performance in amplifying low-amplitude signals, setting a new standard in power-efficient platforms for sensing and amplifying voltage signals in emerging beyond-silicon applications.

Solid-State Organic Electrolyte-Gated Transistors Based on Doping-Controlled Polymer Composites with a Confined Two-Dimensional Channel in Dry Conditions

Donguk Kim et al.

Summary: Comprehensive and comparative studies were conducted on the doping characteristics of various PEDOT composites complexed with sulfonates through chemical and electrochemical controls. Solid-state OEGTs with large current modulation, high hole mobility, and low driving voltage were fabricated using a dedoping agent and an ionogel based on an ionic liquid dispersed in a polymer matrix. The ionogel-based gating of TDAE-treated PEDOT composites induced a reversible transition between highly doped bipolaronic state and neutral/polaronic states, achieving high charge-carrier mobility and on-to-off current ratio.

Summary: The barrier functionality of a cell layer can be modulated by chemical agents like poly-l-lysine (PLL) for drug delivery. The resistance across the cell layer can be measured electrically to assess the ability of the cell layer to impede the passage of ions. OECTs are suitable for in situ monitoring temporal barrier modulation and recovery, providing valuable information for drug delivery applications.

Ion Pair Uptake in Ion Gel Devices Based on Organic Mixed Ionic-Electronic Conductors

Tyler J. Quill et al.

Summary: Passive ion pair uptake from an ion gel electrolyte into an OMIEC is demonstrated in high-speed solid-state devices, while no uptake is observed with a polymerized ionic liquid (PIL) electrolyte. This uptake is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray scattering, showing morphological changes to the OMIEC. In situ Raman spectroscopy reveals a reorganization of both anions and cations during gating, suggesting potential benefits for neuromorphic devices based on OMIECs.

A high endurance, temperature-resilient, and robust organic electrochemical transistor for neuromorphic circuits

Songjia Han et al.

Summary: Artificial synapses combining sensing and computing functions have played an important role in emerging human-like sensory systems. Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are highly sought as promising candidates, but high-performance and long-term stable OECTs that can be integrated with complex circuits are still missing. A hydrogel-based electrochemical transistor (HECT) is proposed here, showing long-term stability, a wide operating temperature, and robustness against damage, while successfully mimicking diverse synaptic functions. The transistor can be integrated with various sensors, providing a promising strategy for the development of future neuromorphic electronics.
