Recurrence-Based Synchronization Analysis of Weakly Coupled Bursting Neurons under External ELF Fields

Aissatou Mboussi Nkomidio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response characteristics of a two-dimensional neuron model exposed to an externally applied ELF electric field and the synchronization of weakly coupled neurons. The results show that neurons can exhibit different spiking patterns, which can be observed in the structure of the recurrence plot. The study also reveals that even in the range of weak coupling, phase synchronization of coupled neurons occurs and increases with the amplitude of the externally applied ELF electric field.

Texture is encoded in precise temporal spiking patterns in primate somatosensory cortex

Katie H. Long et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that millisecond-level spike timing in the somatosensory cortex can encode texture information and shape sensory experience. Texture information is conveyed through highly repeatable temporal spiking patterns in cortical neurons, and this encoding is heterogenous and dependent on the submodality composition and location. Additionally, the temporal patterns dilate and contract with changes in scanning speed, which may contribute to the observed perceptual invariance to speed. The combination of high-precision spike timing and rate-based signals enhances the encoding of texture in the somatosensory cortex.

Realization of long retention properties of quantum conductance through confining the oxygen vacancy diffusion

Jianhui Zhao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the stable long-time retention of multi-level quantum conductance states in highly oriented crystalline vanadium dioxide. Grain boundaries act as reservoirs for oxygen vacancies and confine the oxygen vacancy diffusion in the narrow grain boundaries. This is crucial for realizing quantum conductance-based electronic devices.

A biomimetic neural encoder for spiking neural network

Shiva Subbulakshmi Radhakrishnan et al.

Summary: The authors present a biomimetic dual-gated MoS2 field effect transistor capable of encoding analog signals into stochastic spike trains at an energy cost of 1-5pJ/spike. The demonstration includes encoding analog signals following various neural encoding algorithms and achieving over 91% accurate inference on the MNIST dataset with a trained SNN in approximately 200 timesteps. This highlights the potential for implementing spiking neural networks in future neuromorphic hardware.
