Shear behavior of FRP-UHPC tubular beams

Jun-Jie Zeng et al.

Summary: This study proposed tubular beams made of FRP grid-reinforced UHPC composites (FUC) and investigated the shear behavior of ten FUC tubular beams under shear loading. The effects of shear span ratio and fiber type on the shear behavior were analyzed. It was found that FUC tubular beams exhibited excellent ultimate strength and ductility under shear, and a theoretical model based on the truss-arch theory accurately predicted their shear capacity.

Summary: This study evaluates the prediction of damage grade and rehabilitation interventions using artificial intelligence methods for buildings affected by the 2015 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal. The results show that the XGBoost algorithm predicts building collapse and strengthening more accurately than the other algorithms, and the feature importance from the XGBoost model identifies 19 of the top 20 most important features as relevant for both damage grade and rehabilitation intervention prediction.

Damage assessment of reinforced concrete beams using cost-effective MEMS accelerometers

Sultani Mulk Khan et al.

Summary: In this research, low-cost MEMS accelerometers combined with an Arduino-based data acquisition system were used to acquire vibration data of a reinforced concrete beam at various damage levels. The results showed good agreement with commercially available accelerometers. A finite element model was developed and showed good agreement with the experiment. MEMS accelerometers were found to be cost-effective and can be effectively used for continuous health monitoring of existing civil infrastructure.

Flexural behavior of FRP grid reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete composite plates with different types of fibers

Jun-Jie Zeng et al.

Summary: Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has gained popularity in structural engineering due to its excellent compressive strength and durability. However, its tensile property is inferior, thus requiring appropriate reinforcing materials. In this study, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) grids were used as reinforcements for UHPC plates, and the effects of fiber type, content, and length on the flexural behavior were investigated.

Experimental Study of a New Bar Damper Device for Vibration Control of Structures Subjected to Earthquake Loads

Khaled Ghaedi et al.

Summary: The Bar Damper (BD) is a new yielding damper made of solid bars sandwiched between two plates. Design parameters were formulated based on a simplified mechanical modeling, showing stable hysteretic behavior under cyclic loads and capability of undergoing large displacements without significant strength and stiffness degradation. The slenderness ratio of the bars is a crucial design parameter controlling the effective stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of the dampers, with the strength of the devices estimated from theoretical models consistent with experimental results.

Study on the shear behavior of RC beams strengthened by CFRP grid with epoxy mortar

Lianheng Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the shear behavior of rectangular reinforced concrete beams strengthened by CFRP grid with epoxy mortar through experimental and theoretical research, proposing a prediction model for shear capacity of strengthened beams. The research demonstrated that the shear capacity and crack patterns of RC beams strengthened with CFRP grid can be effectively improved, with attention needed on the shear span-to-effective depth ratio and concrete strength. A novel shear model was also proposed to evaluate the shear capacity of CFRP grid-strengthened RC beams, showing good prediction accuracy and lower dispersion compared to existing models.

Shear Strengthening of Corroded RC Beams Using UHPC-FRP Composites

Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) combined with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites was utilized for shear strengthening of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams, leading to significant increases in shear capacity and suppression of shear crack formation. The introduction of thin carbon FRP (CFRP) meshes in UHPC decreased crack width in concrete without observing any debonding between FRP and UHPC.
