Sandwiched film with reversibly switchable transparency through cyclic melting-crystallization

Fei Peng et al.

Summary: Polymer functional films (PFFs) with switchable transparency have attracted increasing attention recently. However, it has been challenging to fabricate large-area temperature-driven PFFs using a simple, continuous, and environmentally friendly method. In this study, sandwiched polymer functional films (SPFFs) were mass produced using coextrusion blow film molding. The SPFFs consist of a low density polyethylene (LDPE) skin layer and a polyethylene oxide (PEO) core layer. These SPFFs exhibit a wide range of reversibly switchable transparency and rapid response to temperature changes, making them suitable for applications in thermo-photo doors and smart windows. This work presents a facile, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly method for developing low-cost, durable, and large-area SPFFs, and establishes the link between crystallization performance and functional applications in industrial products.

3D printed continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite sandwich structure with corrugated core for high stiffness/load capability

Hui-Jin Um et al.

Summary: Sandwich structures with trapezoidal corrugated cores were 3D printed using fused deposition modeling (FDM) method and short and continuous carbon fiber (CF) reinforced nylon filament. The bending characteristics of different core types were investigated through three-point bending (3PB) tests. It was found that the mechanical behavior and failure modes were significantly influenced by core materials and the split number of cores. The corrugated sandwich structure printed using continuous carbon fiber showed dramatic improvements in mechanical performances compared to a PET foam core structure, with 4.1 times higher specific flexural stiffness, 2.6 times larger specific load capability, and 8.6 times larger energy absorption capability. This result was attributed to the precise fiber alignment achievable with continuous CF 3D printing technology.

Glass/polypropylene hybrid knitted fabrics for toughening of thermoset composites

Emine Uzumcu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the performance of weft knitted fabric reinforced thermoset composites containing glass/polypropylene (PP) hybrid yarns. The addition of PP yarns decreases the overall density of composites and enhances the ductility of the knitted fabrics. However, it decreases the flexural strength of composites while improving the specific flexural strength. The impact and CAI tests show that adding PP yarns enhances the impact and damage tolerance of composites.

Summary: This study investigated the crystallization behaviors of two different high-melt-strength polypropylene resins using a novel high-pressure visualization system, and found that crystal growth rates and nucleation densities increase with higher applied shear stress but reach an optimum value with increasing CO2 pressure. By selectively choosing processing conditions, observable critical size nuclei can be enhanced and CO2 exclusion from crystal growth front can be achieved, allowing for easy control over overall crystallization kinetics through induced-shear stress and pressurized CO2.
