Size and print path effects on mechanical properties of material extrusion 3D printed plastics

Jia-Ruey Ai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of print path and print sequence on the mechanical properties of polycarbonate and polypropylene. The results showed that the interlayer time between printed roads should be controlled within 5 seconds to observe statistical differences in mechanical response. Additionally, the specimen size and raster angle significantly influenced the mechanical properties, with larger effects observed when printing polycarbonate compared to polypropylene.

Closed-loop additive manufacturing of upcycled commodity plastic through dynamic cross-linking

Sungjin Kim et al.

Summary: This study introduces a circular model of plastic manufacturing by upcycling common plastic ABS into recyclable and robust ABS-vitrimer using accessible and scalable fused filament fabrication technique. The successful development of fully processable ABS-vitrimer overcomes the challenge of reprinting cross-linked materials and enables the direct printing of stronger, tougher, and solvent-resistant 3D objects from unsorted plastic waste.

Enhanced interlayer strength and thermal stability via dual material filament for material extrusion additive manufacturing

Brian Koker et al.

Summary: The strength and toughness of 3D printed parts can be improved by extruding dual material thermoplastic filament with a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) in the core. This study demonstrates the scaled production of a dual-material filament with a star-shaped polycarbonate core and an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene sheath. Parts printed and annealed with this filament show significant improvements in impact toughness and tensile strength, while maintaining excellent dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

Brittle polymers in Fused Deposition Modeling: An improved feeding approach to enable the printing of highly drug loaded filament

Nadine Gottschalk et al.

Summary: This study explores a method of printing brittle filaments using a different feeding mechanism, avoiding the use of additional excipients. By investigating the influence of drug load with Ketoconazole on mechanical properties, and analyzing the crystallinity and compatibility of components in filaments, uniform tablets were successfully manufactured.

Importance of Polymer Rheology on Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing: Correlating Process Physics to Print Properties

Arit Das et al.

Summary: Material extrusion (MatEx) is an additive manufacturing technique for fabricating three-dimensional objects based on CAD files, and understanding the rheological properties of polymeric feedstocks is crucial. The rheological characteristics of polymers during MatEx process govern interlayer welding and mechanical performance of printed parts.
