Two well-defined POSS diamines were successfully synthesized through protecting and deprotecting of silanol hydroxyl groups and silylation of silanol hydroxyl groups. These two divinyl POSS macromers were further functionalized into well-defined POSS diamines via Heck reaction. The synthesis of these POSS diamines enabled the examination of the effect of POSS R groups on the properties of organic-inorganic polyimides.
Two well-defined POSS diamines were synthesized withphenyl (Ph)and iso-butyl (i-Bu) POSS trisilanolsas the starting compounds. This approach involves the protection anddeprotection of silanol hydroxyl groups with phenylboronic acid andpinacol, followed by the silylation of silanol hydroxyl groups withmono- and dichlorosilanes. With this route of synthesis, two well-defineddivinyl POSS macromers were obtained, as evidenced by H-1, Si-29 NMR, and mass spectroscopy. These two divinylPOSS macromers were further functionalized into well-defined POSSdiamines via the Heck reaction with p-bromoaniline. The successful synthesis of POSS diamines enabledthe synthesis of organic-inorganic polyimides with the POSScages in the main chains. More importantly, the syntheses of thesetwo POSS diamines allowed the examination of the effect of POSS Rgroups (i.e., Ph and i-Bu) on themorphologies and thermomechanical and dielectric properties of organic-inorganicpolyimides. Notably, the types of POSS R groups exerted a profoundimpact on the morphologies and properties of the organic-inorganicpolyimides.
