Lactide-Valerolactone Copolymers for Packaging Applications

Ainara Sangroniz et al.

Summary: Lactide-valerolactone copolymers have potential application in the packaging sector. Different copolymers were synthesized and their reaction kinetics and microstructure were analyzed. Lactide showed higher reactivity than valerolactone, resulting in composition drift during the reaction. The thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of the copolymers were also studied. The incorporation of valerolactone resulted in copolymers with higher ductility and intermediate water and oxygen permeability, making them suitable materials for packaging.

Understanding the hydrolysis mechanism on segments and aggregate structures: Corrosion-tailored poly (lactic acid) deriving copolymers with 6-valerolactone

Wenjian Huang et al.

Summary: Poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) based copolymers modified with delta-valerolactone (DVL) were prepared and their degradation regulation and mechanism were investigated. The addition and increasing content of DVL accelerated the degradation of the copolymers, and the crystalline region showed better corrosion resistance. Among them, PVLA-B copolymers exhibited superior degradation resistance.

From polymer blends to a block copolymer: Ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide/e-caprolactone eutectic system

Martin Castillo-Santillan et al.

Summary: This work provides new insights into the ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide and e-caprolactone, leading to the synthesis of polymer blends and a block copolymer. The selection of parameters and catalysts allows for the production of polyesters with tunable properties and controlled degradation profiles.

Reinvestigation of the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone with 1,8-diazacyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene organocatalyst in bulk

Yang Chen et al.

Summary: 8-Diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) was successfully used as an organocatalyst for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of epsilon-caprolactone (CL) with benzyl alcohol (BnOH) initiator, leading to well-designed PCLs with a controlled/living polymerization character. Functional initiators were used to obtain end-functionalized PCLs and successfully proceed with block copolymerization of CL with other monomers. Additionally, the reaction mechanism was studied through DFT calculations and NMR measurements.

Stereoretention in the Bulk ROP of L-Lactide Guided by a Thermally Stable Organocatalyst

Andere Basterretxea et al.

Summary: The study shows that using a nonstoichiometric acid-base organocatalyst can promote the solvent-free and metal-free ROP of L-LA at elevated temperatures, resulting in products with high stereoregularity and providing a new approach for the design and application of new catalysts.
