Need and Interest in Nature Prescriptions to Protect Cardiovascular and Mental Health: A Nationally-Representative Study With Insights for Future Randomised Trials

Thomas Astell-Burt et al.

Summary: A survey conducted in Australia investigated the need and interest in nature prescriptions among adults with cardiovascular diseases, psychological distress, and related factors. The findings revealed that despite low levels of nature contact in many target health groups, a majority of participants expressed interest in nature prescriptions, highlighting the potential for conducting randomized trials of interventions to increase nature exposure.

Leafier Communities, Healthier Hearts: An Australian Cohort Study of 104,725 Adults Tracking Cardiovascular Events and Mortality Across 10 Years of Linked Health Data

Xiaoqi Feng et al.

Summary: This study finds that green spaces can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, but the impact varies depending on the type of green space. Urban reforestation is particularly beneficial for residents living in houses, while the relationship between urban greening and cardiovascular health for apartment residents needs further investigation.

Green space quality and adolescent mental health: do personality traits matter?

The nexus between urban green space, housing type, and mental health

Xiaoqi Feng et al.

Summary: The increasing momentum for urban densification has led to more opportunities for apartment-living but less availability of green spaces, which negatively affects mental health. However, in contexts where apartment-living is not common and viewed as secondary, occupants may benefit more from green spaces.

Residential greenness and risks of depression: Longitudinal associations with different greenness indicators and spatial scales in a Finnish population cohort

Carlos Gonzales-Inca et al.

Summary: In this longitudinal study conducted in urban areas in Finland, we found an inverse association between residential greenness and depression risk. Individuals with higher residential greenness had lower depression risk. The association was particularly evident when using NDVI-based assessment and adjusting for individual-level covariates. The associations varied depending on the type of depression assessment, quality of greenness indicators, and spatial scale of analysis.

Mental health clinicians' perceptions of nature-based interventions within community mental health services: evidence from Australia

Rachel Tambyah et al.

Summary: This study explored the perceptions of mental health clinicians on the potential benefits of nature-based interventions (NBIs) and the barriers to implementing them in a community mental health setting. Clinicians viewed spending time in nature as relaxing, refreshing, and therapeutic, and expressed willingness to promote NBIs to their consumers. However, they had concerns about barriers such as consumers' mental health symptoms and organizational policies.

Green space and loneliness: A systematic review with theoretical and methodological guidance for future research

Thomas Astell-Burt et al.

Summary: Persistent loneliness is a common problem across the life span, and urban greening may help reduce its impact on population health. However, existing evidence and conceptual models on the relationship between green space and loneliness are lacking. This systematic review integrates quantitative and qualitative studies to provide a comprehensive understanding of how different types of green space can influence different types of loneliness, and how various factors at personal, relational, and collective levels can affect the benefits or harms of green space. The review and model offer guidance for decision making and further research on the topic.

Greenspace programmes for mental health: A survey study to test what works, for whom, and in what circumstances

Wendy Masterton et al.

Summary: The study tested the accuracy of a novel framework for greenspace programmes for mental health using primary data from greenspace organizations in Scotland. A survey was completed by 64 participants to provide an overview of the framework's applicability for mental health programmes and for programmes supporting people with substance use issues. Overall, respondents agreed with all survey statements, indicating the framework effectively represents the context, mechanism, and outcome configurations of greenspace programmes for mental health. The framework has the potential to be applicable to both mental health and substance use programmes in greenspace settings.
