STAT1 and Its Crucial Role in the Control of Viral Infections

Manlio Tolomeo et al.

Summary: STAT1 protein plays a crucial role in the immune response against viruses, and its deficiency can result in severe infections and even death. It has been found that some viruses inhibit the activity of STAT1, making it important to search for drugs that can target these viral proteins for the treatment of dangerous viral infections and future viral pandemics, as demonstrated by the clinical results with Paxlovid in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients.

A biomarker for lymphoma development in Sjogren's syndrome: Salivary gland focus score

Loukas Chatzis et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the role of LMSG focus score (FS) in stratifying SS patients, with findings identifying FS, cryoglobulinemia, and salivary gland enlargement (SGE) as independent lymphoma-associated risk factors. Patients with FS >= 4 had a shorter time interval to lymphoma diagnosis and were more likely to develop B cell origin manifestations and lymphoma. These results suggest that FS evaluated at the time of SS diagnosis may serve as a predictive biomarker for early diagnosis of SS-associated lymphomas.

Tofacitinib counteracts IL-6 overexpression induced by deficient autophagy: implications in Sjogren's syndrome

Maria-Jose Barrera et al.

Summary: The study found that the decreased expression of ATG5 in LSG epithelial cells of pSS patients may contribute to increased inflammation. Additionally, activation of the JAK-STAT pathway was associated with clinical manifestations of pSS patients. The research also revealed that tofacitinib has anti-inflammatory effects in the experimental tissues with ATG5 deficiency.
