Effect of oxygen vacancies on the photocatalytic activity of flower-like BiOBr microspheres towards NO oxidation and CO2 reduction

Xiaofang Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the synthesis of defect-rich flower-like BiOBr microspheres and the enhanced photocatalytic activity for NO oxidation and CO2 reduction. The presence of oxygen vacancies plays a crucial role in improving the photoreactivity by enhancing substrate adsorption, expanding light-response range, and increasing charge separation/migration.

Mechanistic and kinetic studies of benzyl alcohol photocatalytic oxidation by nanostructured titanium (hydro)oxides: Do we know the entire story?

Dimitrios A. Giannakoudakis et al.

Summary: Selective partial oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde without additives was achieved using advantageous titanium oxide nano-photocatalysts. Titanate nanotubes and nanocores of anatase surrounded by amorphous titanium hydroxide phase performed the best. Different mechanisms and oxidation pathways are photo-catalyzed depending on the physicochemical features of the nanocatalysts and the light irradiation. The study also revealed that utilizing organic compounds like benzoquinone as scavenger may result in photolytic decomposition.

Enhanced photocatalytic benzyl alcohol oxidation over Bi4Ti3O12 ultrathin nanosheets

Mingchuang Shen et al.

Summary: Ultrathin Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets with a thickness of about 3.9 nm were successfully synthesized and used as a photocatalyst for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol. The nanosheets exhibited a photocatalytic performance about 8 times higher than that of bulk Bi4Ti3O12. The enhanced performance was attributed to the presence of more surface Lewis acid sites for adsorption and activation of benzyl alcohol, as well as the efficient utilization of photogenerated electrons and holes to produce radicals.

Hierarchical Core-Shell ACOF-1@BiOBr as an Efficient Photocatalyst for the Degradation of Emerging Organic Contaminants

Ahmed E. ElMetwally et al.

Summary: A hierarchical coreshell structure of nanostructured ACOF-1@BiOBr was prepared and its performance in the degradation of organic contaminants under light irradiation was demonstrated. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ACOF-1@BiOBr system can be attributed to the synergy between ACOF-1 and BiOBr, which form a Type-II heterostructure that reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers. The ACOF-1@BiOBr system also exhibited enhanced generation of superoxide radicals.

POM-incorporated ZnIn2S4 Z-scheme dual-functional photocatalysts for cooperative benzyl alcohol oxidation and H2 evolution in aqueous solution

Fangshu Xing et al.

Summary: Efficient aromatic alcohol oxidation with simultaneous H-2 evolution under aqueous conditions was achieved using a polyoxometalate (POM)-incorporated ZnIn2S4 dual-functional photocatalytic system. The synergy between HPM and ZIS contributed to the formation of a Z-type heterojunction structure, enhancing redox capacity. The sub-nanometer size of POM clusters ensured faster interfacial charge transfer kinetics.

Activating C-H Bonds by Tuning Fe Sites and an Interfacial Effect for Enhanced Methanol Oxidation

Sheng Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple two-step strategy was employed to fabricate α-Fe2O3/CoFe2O4 heterostructures for methanol conversion. The optimized sample, ZnFeCo-2, exhibited excellent performance in terms of photocurrent density, Faraday efficiency, and long-term stability. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the heterostructured α-Fe2O3/CoFe2O4 effectively improved methanol conversion efficiency by lowering adsorption, activation, and desorption energies.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance of BiVO4/BiOBr through combining Fermi level alteration and oxygen defect engineering

Chun Liu et al.

Summary: The introduction of oxygen vacancies can enhance photocatalytic activity, but its influence on the interfacial charge transfer pathway is still not well understood. In this study, BiVO4/BiOBr-Ov photocatalysts were synthesized and characterized. The results showed that 20% BVB-Ov had the highest degradation rate for Oxytetracycline. Various experiments and calculations revealed that the existence of oxygen vacancies altered the photogenerated carrier transfer path from type-II to Z-scheme.

Oxygen Vacancies Induced Plasmonic Effect for Realizing Broad-Spectrum-Driven Photocatalytic H2 Evolution over an S-Scheme CdS/W18O49 Heterojunction

Qinqin Liu et al.

Summary: Integrating oxygen-vacancy-rich W18O49 as a plasmon antenna with CdS can enhance the photocatalytic H-2 generation activity under visible light, achieving a higher efficiency compared to CdS alone. This enhancement is attributed to the improved light-harvesting ability and faster charge separation caused by the LSPR effect of W18O49 plasmon with rich oxygen vacancies and an S-scheme transfer mechanism.
