Mixed matrix membranes comprising dual-facilitated bio-inspired filler for enhancing CO2 separation

Xia Lv et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel dual-facilitated bio-inspired zeolitic imidazolate framework was proposed to simulate the function of carbonic anhydrase and enhance CO2 separation performance. The bio-inspired active sites and amino groups of Bio-ZIF helped catalyze the reversible hydration of CO2 and produce zwitterion as an intermediate, facilitating CO2 permeation in the mixed matrix membranes. The as-prepared membranes exhibited excellent CO2 separation performance, surpassing the 2008 upper bound.

Modeling Metal Influence on the Gate Opening in ZIF-8 Materials

Jenny G. Vitillo et al.

Summary: Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) undergo pressure-induced phase transitions that are peculiar to each ZIF, and the metal dependence of the ambient pressure and high pressure phases of ZIF-8(M) with Mg, Fe, and Zn has been studied. The substitution of Zn with Mg or Fe influences the gate opening energy significantly, with ZIF-8(Fe) showing a different lowest energy phase structure compared to ZIF-8(Mg) and ZIF-8(Zn), which is closer to the high pressure phase. Additionally, ZIF-8(Fe) is confirmed to have high-spin divalent iron in antiferromagnetic coupling, making it a promising material for catalysis and photocatalysis due to its band gap in the visible light range.

Gas separation performance of MMMs containing (PIM-1)-functionalized GO derivatives

Jose Miguel Luque-Alled et al.

Summary: A strategy to reduce physical aging in PIM-1 membranes by incorporating novel functionalized graphene oxide (GO) fillers is reported. The best performance was achieved by a membrane containing 10 wt% of (PIM-1)-functionalized APTS-GO, maintaining 85% of the initial CO2 permeability after 150 days. This represents about nine-fold less CO2 permeability drop compared to pure PIM-1.
