Surface State Changes of Pd Three-Way Catalysts under Dynamic Lean/Rich Perturbation Compared with Static Condition

Ayumi Fujiwara et al.

Summary: In three-way catalytic converters, perturbations in exhaust gas composition between fuel-rich and fuel-lean conditions affect catalyst surface and conversion efficiencies. In this study, real-time changes in surface states of Pd-based catalysts were monitored using in situ diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The oxidation state of Pd fluctuated in sync with the perturbations, with smaller oscillation amplitude on CeO2-ZrO2 (CZ) compared to Al2O3. CZ's oxygen scavenging function buffered oxidative degradation, resulting in higher reaction rates and preventing coke deposition. This study highlights the usefulness of in situ DRS in understanding transient catalytic processes and bridging the gap between on-board performances and laboratory tests.

Thermodynamically and Kinetically Stabilized Pt Clusters Against Sintering on CeO2 Nanofibers Through Enclosing CeO2 Nanocubes

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: In this work, a double-confinement strategy is demonstrated to stabilize 2.6 nm-Pt clusters against sintering on electrospun CeO2 nanofibers decorated by CeO2 nanocubes (m-CeO2). The Pt clusters are physically restricted on each facet of CeO2 nanocubes in a nanosized region, allowing them to remain stable at high temperatures without observable size growth or migration. This sinter-resistant catalytic system exhibits enhanced catalytic activity towards hydrogenation and oxidation reactions.

Thermal Aging of Rh/ZrO2-CeO2 Three-Way Catalysts under Dynamic Lean/Rich Perturbation Accelerates Deactivation via an Encapsulation Mechanism

Masato Machida et al.

Summary: Under dynamic SLR cycle conditions, the Rh/ZrO2-CeO2 (Rh/ZC) three-way catalyst experienced more severe deactivation compared to static conditions. The complete encapsulation of Rh particles with a ZC overlayer under dynamic SLR cycle conditions led to physical blockage and suppressed catalytic activity. This encapsulation phenomenon was not recovered by post-treatment in air at 1000 degrees C.

Influence of the strategy for mixing Pd/La-Al2O3 and Pd/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 on the activity of three-way catalysts

Han Zhao et al.

Summary: The mixing-calcination-aging strategy can enhance the catalytic performance and oxygen storage capacity of three-way catalysts, but it leads to a transient drop in conversion rate, which is caused by the reduction of PdO.

A study of ageing effect: Migration of rhodium under air atmosphere

Yasutaka Tomida et al.

Summary: Rh is the key element in current TWC technology, but can deteriorate and migrate during high-temperature ageing. The migration results in new Rh-support interactions, supported by the formation of RhAlOx on the catalyst surface. After ageing, Rh/CZ + Al and Rh/Al + CZ show similar NO reduction performance, possibly due to Rh migration.

Catalyst Deactivation via Rhodium-Support Interactions under High-Temperature Oxidizing Conditions: A Comparative Study on Hexaaluminates versus Al2O3

Masato Machida et al.

Summary: The study found that replacing Al2O3 with hexaaluminates can effectively mitigate the deactivation of Rh catalysts under high-temperature oxidizing atmosphere, with the hexaaluminate structure able to block the diffusion of Rh3+ species and keep them near the surface. This structure shows promise in maintaining catalytic activity and outperforming Al2O3 as a support material for Rh catalysts.
