Solvent-free synthesis of high-performance polyurethane elastomer based on low-molecular-weight alkali lignin

Jianhua Huang et al.

Summary: A solvent-free synthesis method was used to prepare lignin-containing polyurethane elastomers with high strength, high toughness, and high elasticity. The lignin reacted with isocyanates to form a chemical cross-linking network and also formed a hydrogen bond network with the polyurethane matrix to create a nano-micro phase separation structure. This resulted in a dual-crosslinking network structure and excellent mechanical properties.

Lignin depolymerization with alkaline ionic liquids and ethylene glycol in a continuous flow reactor

Mingming Peng et al.

Summary: A novel alkaline ionic liquid ([APy]OH) was developed as a catalyst and co-solvent for the depolymerization of lignin. Different reaction conditions were investigated, and the combination of [APy]OH and alkali metal salts showed synergistic effects. The depolymerization of three different lignins was studied, with sodium lignosulfonate exhibiting the highest yields of liquid products and aromatics. Changes in lignin structure were observed and a hypothetical pathway for lignin depolymerization was proposed.

Durability of model degraded wood treated with organosilicon compounds against fungal decay

Magdalena Broda et al.

Summary: Conservation agents are used to preserve degraded wooden artefacts by restoring their structural integrity. However, treatments that provide dimensional stability and resistance to wood-decaying organisms are desired to prevent further biodegradation. This study found that certain organosilicon compounds could stabilize dimensions of waterlogged wood and protect against fungal decay. The results suggest that these tested organosilicons can serve as multi-purpose conservation agents for degraded wooden objects.

Alkylation modification for lignin color reduction and molecular weight adjustment

Xiao Jiang et al.

Summary: An efficient crosslinking reaction using DMF and 1,6-dibromohexane was proposed to adjust the molecular weight and color of industrial kraft lignin. After alkylation modification, the molecular weights of lignin increased by 1643%, and the main types of linkages remained resinol, 13-aryl ether, and phenylcoumaran. The reduction in color was attributed to the low content of chromophores and low packing density of the alkylation lignin.
