Tuning of photoluminescence intensity and Fermi level position of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes by molecule confinement

Romain Chambard et al.

Summary: The photoluminescence of single-walled carbon nanotubes is monitored at the individual scale by encapsulating molecules into their hollow core. The electronic character of the confined molecule affects the photoluminescence intensity, with enhancement or quenching observed depending on whether the molecule is an electron donor or acceptor. Charge transfer and Fermi level shift are believed to be responsible for these behaviors, supported by Raman G-band shifts and photoemission experiments. It is suggested that the electron affinity or ionization potential of encapsulated molecules and the nanotube diameter are important parameters for tuning the light emission properties of the hybrid systems at the nanoscale.

Intertube Excitonic Coupling in Nanotube Van der Waals Heterostructures

Maria G. Burdanova et al.

Summary: Strong intertube excitonic coupling is demonstrated in 1D van der Waals heterostructures through the interaction of dipole-dipole Coulomb interactions and light-matter interactions. This leads to the creation of intertube biexcitons on short timescales and intertube excitons on longer timescales, which opens up new possibilities for multi-functional applications of these new nanoscale coaxial cables.

Zigzag HgTe Nanowires Modify the Electron- Phonon Interaction in Chirality-Refined Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Ziyi Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of HgTe NWs synthesized inside SWCNTs on their optical and electronic properties. The results showed that the influence varied with the chirality of the SWCNTs. For semiconducting SWCNTs, HgTe NWs suppressed Auger relaxation processes and enhanced photoluminescence. On the other hand, HgTe NWs increased the Auger relaxation rate and phonon relaxation of metallic SWCNTs, boosting electronic transport.

Optical Property Tuning of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes by Endohedral Encapsulation of a Wide Variety of Dielectric Molecules

Jochen Campo et al.

Summary: Specific and tunable modification of the optical properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is demonstrated through direct encapsulation of guest molecules with varying dielectric constants into the nanotube interior. The insertion of over 30 different compounds covering a wide range of dielectric constants results in a monotonic energy reduction of optical transitions with increasing dielectric constant. The overall trend of filler dielectric on nanotube optical properties, including fluorescence intensity and line narrowing, is observed with some exceptions that defy existing theory.

Selective filling of n-hexane in a tight nanopore

Haoran Qu et al.

Summary: Research has shown that single-wall carbon nanotubes can separate n-hexane from cyclohexane through nanopores, despite the fact that the kinetic diameters of these molecules are larger than the pore size. Simulations and experiments have revealed that n-hexane molecules can stretch inside the nanotube pores, challenging current understanding of nanopore selectivity.

Host-Guest Molecular Interaction Enabled Separation of Large-Diameter Semiconducting Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Xusheng Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a host-guest molecular interaction strategy was introduced for selectively extracting semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNTs) of expected diameters by filling polyoxometalate clusters of specific size in the inner cavities of SWCNTs. The sorted s-SWCNTs with diameters concentrated at around 1.3-1.4 nm showed typical semiconductor behavior in field-effect transistors. The sorting mechanism involving size-dependent electron transfer from nanotubes to inner polyoxometalate was revealed through spectroscopic and electron microscopic evidence, as well as theoretical calculations, demonstrating the flexibility in tuning the diameter of sorted s-SWCNTs.
