Structure and Properties of PVDF/PA6 Blends Compatibilized by Ionic Liquid-Grafted PA6

Xin Zheng et al.

Summary: In this work, a grafted polyamide 6 with quasi-block structure was used as a compatibilizer for an immiscible PVDF/PA6 blend, and its effects on the morphology, crystallization behavior, mechanical properties, and surface resistance of the blend were systematically investigated. It was found that the compatibilizer had a favorable effect on the blend, improving its morphology and mechanical properties, and providing surface conductivity. Differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffractometry results revealed different effects of the compatibilizer on the crystallization behavior of PVDF and PA6.

Cellulose blends with polylactic acid or polyamide 6 from solution blending: Microstructure and polymer interactions

Kerstin Mueller et al.

Summary: This study uses a solvent-based rapid precipitation method to address the limitations of using cellulose in polymer blends. It found that cellulose forms single-phase amorphous blends with intense intermolecular hydrogen bonding with polylactic acid, while forming a two-phase morphological structure with polyamide 6. Homogeneous blend formation between polylactic acid and cellulose shows promise for further material developments.

Ahmad Adlie Shamsuri et al.

Summary: The enhanced awareness of environmental conservation has led researchers to search for alternatives to volatile organic compounds in polymer processing. Ionic liquids have emerged as non-volatile, recyclable, and non-flammable solvents for biodegradable polymers, as well as for the preparation of electrospun fibers. This concise review provides examples of natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers commonly used in electrospinning, and showcases the utilization of ionic liquids in the process. It also demonstrates the preparation of electrospinning solutions using ionic liquids, and presents a concise review of the properties of electrospun biodegradable polymer fibers assisted by different ionic liquids.

Ionic Liquid-Cured Epoxy/PCL Blends with Improved Toughness and Adhesive Properties

Lidia Orduna et al.

Summary: In this study, the phase behavior, microstructure, mechanical and adhesive properties of ionic liquid (IL)-cured epoxy resins modified with poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) were investigated. The results showed that the addition of PCL plasticized the network blends, reducing the glass transition temperature and crosslinking density. Low PCL contents had little impact on the mechanical properties, but significantly improved the adhesive properties. However, higher PCL contents, especially using imidazolium-based IL, greatly increased the toughness. Overall, the balance achieved between mechanical and adhesive properties of IL-cured epoxy/PCL blends is an important step towards sustainability, with the use of a biodegradable polymer and non-volatile ILs as curing agents.

Effect of ionic liquid segments of copolymer on compatibilization process and dielectric behavior of polylactide/polyvinylidene fluoride blends

Ping Wang et al.

Summary: The effects of PMI on the compatibility of PLA and PVDF were investigated, showing significant improvement compared to PMV. The compatibility of PLA and PVDF was related to the relaxation behavior of the blends, identified with MWS interfacial polarization. The higher epsilon' of PLA/PVDF/PMI blends was attributed to the stimulation of MWS interfacial polarization by the ion mobility of PMI.
