A Discrete Fracture Network Model for Prediction of Longwall-Induced Permeability

K. M. Ajayi et al.

Summary: Longwall-induced deformations can jeopardize the mechanical integrity of shale gas well casings in the abutment pillar and allow gas flow into the mine, posing safety concerns. This study develops a discrete fracture network (DFN) model to characterize fractures in the overburden and compares its permeability with field measurements. The results show that the DFN model accurately represents field conditions and provides critical information about fracture characteristics, which can be used to predict gas flow in the event of a casing breach.

Evaluation of Parameters Influencing Potential Gas Flow to the Mine in the Event of a Nearby Unconventional Shale Gas Well Casing Breach

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of longwall-induced deformations on the integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings and the potential gas flow into the mine. The results show that changes in fracture aperture and fracture water saturation significantly affect the gas flow.

Assessing Gas Leakage Potential into Coal Mines from Shale Gas Well Failures: Inference from Field Determination of Strata Permeability Responses to Longwall-Induced Deformations

Eric Watkins et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the changes in permeability at boreholes above an abutment pillar in a longwall coal mine, showing an increase in permeability around the boreholes due to mining-induced deformations. Measuring permeability changes can be an effective method to assess the potential interaction between shale gas wells and the mine environment.
