Effect of Vacuum Heat Treatment on Larch Earlywood and Latewood Cell Wall Properties

Bailing Sun et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the hygroscopicity and nanomechanics of larch earlywood and latewood after thermal modification under vacuum conditions. Vacuum heat treatment reduced the hygroscopicity of both earlywood and latewood and increased hysteresis between the adsorption and desorption branches. The treatment temperature had a more pronounced influence on the hygroscopicity of latewood. Imaging FTIR microscopy revealed degradation of hemicellulose, cross-linking, condensation reactions, and redistribution of lignin in the cell wall. The elastic modulus and cell wall hardness increased after heat treatment. The analysis suggests that vacuum heat treatment decreases hygroscopicity and improves wood cell wall mechanics by altering the chemical composition distribution of cell walls.

Effect of oxidizing thermal modification on the chemical properties and thermal conductivity of Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) wood

Iveta Cabalova et al.

Summary: The research found that under higher temperature and longer duration of thermal modification, the content of extractives in wood increased, lignin content changed mainly due to the formation of pseudo-lignin, cellulose content increased, and hemicellulose content decreased. Additionally, thermal modification also affected the wood density and thermal conductivity.

Eco-friendly and mildly modification of wood cell walls with heat treated wood extracts to improve wood decay resistance

Zhenju Bi et al.

Summary: This study explored the potential of using heat treated wood sawdust extracts as a natural substitute for wood preservatives, and improved its leaching resistance through a mild enzyme-catalyzed method. The results suggest that laccase-mediated pre-treatment of plant extracts has the potential to increase resistance to leaching.

Thermal modification of wood-a review: chemical changes and hygroscopicity

Callum Hill et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the influence of cell wall moisture content during thermal modification process on the properties of thermally modified timber (TMT). It compares TMT modified under dry and wet conditions, analyzing the role of hydroxyl groups, cell wall polymer mobility, and crosslinking in sorption behavior. The study also raises questions regarding the role of OH groups in sorption behavior based on the changes observed in TMT after water leaching post-treatment.

Summary: The study explored the variation of secondary metabolites in sweet chestnut and European beech wood under thermal effect, finding that autoclave extraction produced more compounds and beech wood had low degradation after modification. A difference in biologically active compounds was observed in the two wood species after thermal modification.
