Optimal Generation of Multivariate Seismic Intensity Maps Using Hazard Quantization

Liyang Ma et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method for generating optimal multivariate intensity measure (IM) maps that represent various aspects of earthquake intensity. The proposed method extends the single-variate hazard quantization (HQ) methodology to effectively sample IM maps with multiple intensity measures. The use of multiple intensity measures allows for a more comprehensive representation of earthquake events. The method was tested on the seismic region of Charleston, South Carolina, and its ability to accurately estimate hazard curves and capture spatial autocorrelations and cross correlations was investigated. The method was found to be robust, with the sample size affecting its performance. (C) 2021 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Copula-Based Probabilistic Approaches for Predicting Debris-Flow Runout Distances in the Wenchuan Earthquake Zone

Mi Tian et al.

Summary: This paper developed copula-based probabilistic approaches for predicting the runout distances of debris flows in the Wenchuan earthquake zone. The proposed methods integrate various factors into a three-dimensional copula-based probabilistic model and have been validated using field investigation data. Results show that the approaches properly estimate the maximum runout distances of debris flows for a specific probability level.

Effect of Normal Transformation Methods on Performance of Multivariate Normal Distribution

Yelu Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the application of normal transformation methods related to marginal probability density functions (PDFs) in constructing multivariate normal distributions. By comparing three different types of normal transformation methods, it is found that all three methods are applicable within the framework of multivariate normal distribution. Based on the consistency between the normality of the transformed variables and the performance of the constructed multivariate normal distribution, the Johnson transformation method is recommended.

Dysfunctionality Hazard Curve: Risk-Based Tool to Support the Resilient Design of Systems Subjected to Multihazards

Somayajulu L. N. Dhulipala

Summary: Resilience metrics often overlook uncertainties in multiple hazard occurrences, while a risk-based tool called the dysfunctionality hazard curve is proposed to assess system resilience. This curve expresses system recovery performance in terms of frequency, considering uncertainties in multihazard events.
