Assessment of soil loss rate using GIS-RUSLE interface in Tashat Watershed, Northwestern Ethiopia

Mequanent Abathun Mengie et al.

Summary: Soil erosion is a persistent problem caused by deforestation, improper cultivation, uncontrolled grazing, and other anthropogenic activities. This study utilized remote sensing data and GIS to assess soil erosion in the Tashat watershed in the Abay basin, Ethiopia. The findings showed that the most affected areas by soil erosion are located in the steepest middle section of the watershed.

Spatiotemporal land use and cover changes across agroecologies and slope gradients using geospatial technologies in Zoa watershed, Southwest Ethiopia

Ginjo Gitima et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the spatio-temporal dynamics of land use/land cover (LULC) and their drivers in the Zoa watershed of Omo-Gibe basin, Southwest Ethiopia. The results revealed that inappropriate land use planning and the expansion of traditional agricultural practices have led to soil erosion and ecological changes. Farmland has increased significantly, while shrubland and grassland have declined. The expansion of farmland towards steep slopes may exacerbate soil degradation. Rapid population growth and demand for agricultural land are major drivers of LULC dynamics. Effective management strategies through appropriate land use planning are needed to address the adverse effects of LULC dynamics.

Agroecology-based soil erosion assessment for better conservation planning in Ethiopian river basins

Ayele Almaw Fenta et al.

Summary: Soil erosion by water is a major environmental concern in Ethiopia, with cropland, river basins, and agroecological zones being the main areas affected. Implementing specific land management practices can significantly reduce soil loss and support sustainable use of land and water resources, particularly in severely eroded areas like the Abay and Tekeze basins and Dega and Weyna Dega agroecologies.

Soil Erosion Assessment Using the RUSLE Model and Geospatial Techniques (Remote Sensing and GIS) in South-Central Niger (Maradi Region)

Mohamed Adou Sidi Almouctar et al.

Summary: A systematic method incorporating RUSLE, remote sensing, and GIS was used to estimate soil erosion potential in the Maradi region of Niger. Factors such as rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility, and land management practices were found to influence soil erosion rates, with the most severe erosion occurring in central and west-southern areas.

Summary: By integrating remote sensing techniques, GIS, and the Revised Universal Soil Loss (RUSLE) Equation, this study quantitatively evaluated soil erosion severity and identified the most erosion-prone areas in the Oued Laou basin, Northwestern Morocco. The results showed that most of the basin area has moderate to severe soil loss rates, with abrupt slopes being the main cause of erosion.

Smallholder farmers' decisions to the combined use of soil conservation practices in Tiwa watershed, Northwest highlands of Ethiopia

Ermias Debie

Summary: Soil erosion by water is a critical issue in the northwest highlands of Ethiopia, with farmers' limited decision to adopt combined soil conservation practices. A study in the Tiwa watershed identified factors such as land ownership, plot distance, soil fertility, and technical fitness as influencing farmers' decisions to combine various soil conservation methods. Promoting the uptake of these practices requires recognition of institutional, technical, and plot-level factors.

Land Cover Change in the Blue Nile River Headwaters: Farmers' Perceptions, Pressures, and Satellite-Based Mapping

Alelgn Ewunetu et al.

Summary: The headwaters of the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia are highly susceptible to land degradation, impacting water quality and flow dynamics. Through satellite remote sensing and surveys, it was found that over the past 31 years, there has been changes in land use/cover with agriculture and plantation forest land increasing, while other land types decreasing. These changes are consistent with pressures reported by local residents and root causes including population growth, land tenure, poverty, weak enforcement, lack of awareness, and poor infrastructure.

Soil erosion risk and sediment yield assessment with universal soil loss equation and GIS: in Dijo watershed, Rift valley Basin of Ethiopia

Bagegnehu Bekele et al.

Summary: Soil erosion is a major issue in Ethiopia, particularly in the Dijo watersheds. By using Geographic Information System and the Universal Soil Loss Equation, the study estimated soil erosion rates and identified hotspot areas for proper planning. The study found that most of the watershed areas had low soil erosion severity, but some areas in the upper parts showed moderate erosion, highlighting the need for conservation interventions. Policies focusing on reducing low and moderate soil erosion through various conservation methods are necessary to maintain land productivity. The integration of USLE and GIS proved to be effective in mapping soil erosion distribution across the watershed, offering valuable insights for land management strategies.

Gender differences in agricultural productivity: evidence from maize farm households in southern Ethiopia

Summary: This study found that male-headed households have significantly higher maize productivity than female-headed households, but if female-headed households receive the same return on resources, their productivity could increase. Therefore, agricultural policies should focus on helping female-headed households to reduce the productivity gap between male-headed and female-headed households.
