Highly effective agro-waste based functional green adsorbents for toxic chromium(VI) ion removal from wastewater

Mohammad Mahbub Kabir et al.

Summary: Two novel and economically competitive adsorbents, ATAB and GS-GO@FeNPs, were synthesized from waste-tea-leaves to remove chromium from contaminated water, showing great potential for reuse and outstanding adsorption capabilities. The adsorption process was well described by pseudo-second order kinetic model and Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, highlighting the effectiveness and feasibility of the adsorbents in remediation of Cr(VI) from aquatic environments.

Adsorption of dental clinic pollutants using bone char: Adsorbent preparation, assessment and mechanism analysis

Laura Gabriela Elvir-Padilla et al.

Summary: The assessment of bone char for the adsorption of toxic dental clinic pollutants was conducted. The study evaluated different conditions for bone char preparation and its adsorption properties using fluoride, mercury, and arsenic. The results showed that the dehydroxylation of hydroxyapatite in bone char affected its adsorption properties for the removal of these pollutants. The study provides insights into the adsorption mechanism and interactions involved, contributing to the development of solutions for water pollution caused by dental clinics.

Global food waste across the income spectrum: Implications for food prices, production and resource use

Emiliano Lopez Barrera et al.

Summary: This study addresses the quantitative linkages between food waste, food security, and environmental sustainability on a global scale. It develops a new panel database on household food waste at the national level and analyzes the non-linear relationship between per capita income and the share of food availability wasted. Future trajectories of household food waste show that emerging economies could play a key role in determining global food waste at mid-century, with implications for environmental and food security.

Novel solid-state sensor material for efficient cadmium(II) detection and capturing from wastewater

Ahmed Shahat et al.

Summary: In this study, a solid-state sensor for simultaneous detection and adsorption of cadmium ion was successfully fabricated. The sensor exhibited high selectivity and reusability, with the ability to detect ultra-trace levels of Cd(II) ion and a suitable pH of 7.0. The sensor showed a good adsorption capacity and was able to be reused after desorption using HCl without significant loss in performance.

Sunflower biomass power plant by-products: Properties and its potential for water purification of organic pollutants

Tetiana S. Hubetska et al.

Summary: This study explores the possibility of using sunflower seed husk agricultural waste as a feedstock for preparing activated carbon, optimizing the process parameters to enhance adsorption efficiency. By pre-treating sunflower biomass with tetrahydrofuran and further thermal and chemical activation, AC products with high specific surface area are obtained. The adsorption capacity of the AC towards methylene blue is higher than that of commercial activated carbon, indicating the potential economic benefits of by-product-based adsorbents.

Fluoride sources, toxicity and fluorosis management techniques-A brief review

Shreyas J. Kashyap et al.

Summary: Fluoride contamination in drinking water is a global issue leading to various health problems, requiring effective defluoridation techniques. Techniques such as the Nalgonda technique, reverse osmosis, and adsorption using activated alumina have shown promise in reducing fluoride concentration. Further research should focus on drawbacks of defluoridation techniques and the impact of co-existing ions on fluoride toxicity levels.

Modeling and experimental approaches for determining fluoride diffusion kinetics in bone char sorbent and prediction of packed-bed groundwater defluoridator performance

Margaret O. Thompson et al.

Summary: Excessive fluoride in groundwater is a global issue affecting the health of millions, and using animal bone char as a low-cost sorbent is a promising water treatment solution. The study on fluoride uptake in bone char contactors showed that linearly proportional diffusivity of fluoride as a function of bone char particle size is a superior simulation approach for treatment performance evaluation. The PD-RSSCT method provided a more accurate simulation of pilot column fluoride breakthrough compared to the CD-RSSCT method.
