Microscale zero-valent aluminum (mZVAl) is an excellent electron donor and can activate persulfate (PS). However, the natural oxide layer of mZVAl hinders electron transfer. In this study, a composite material consisting of mZVAl and Fe-bearing clay (mZVAl-NaNAu-2) was obtained through ball milling and showed excellent efficiency in degrading various organic contaminants in water.

Hydrodynamic cavitation-enhanced heterogeneous activation of persulfate for tetracycline degradation: Synergistic effects, degradation mechanism and pathways

Summary: This study proposes using hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) to enhance mass transfer and oxidant utilization in zero-valent iron (Fe-0) activated persulfate (PS) system. The results show that HC increases the reactivity of Fe-0 and improves the activation of PS. It is also found that the degradation of pollutants is more effective in acidic conditions. The mechanism of catalyst regeneration by HC is investigated using SEM, TEM, and BET analysis. This study provides valuable insights into the application of sulfate radical (SO4 center dot-) based advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) in wastewater treatment.

Optimization of the process variables using central composite design resulted in an optimal performance with high COD and color removal efficiency.

Major classes of ECs include pharmaceuticals and personal care products, surfactants, plasticizers, pesticides, fire retardants, and nanomaterials. In wastewater treatment plants, EC removal efficiency ranges from 20-50% in the primary treatment step, 30-70% in the secondary treatment step, and >90% in the tertiary treatment step.

Recent advances in persulfate-assisted TiO2-based photocatalysis for wastewater treatment: Performances, mechanism and perspectives

Summary: The use of persulfate-assisted TiO2 photocatalysis for wastewater treatment is an effective method to enhance the separation of electron/hole pairs and generate sulfate radicals for improved degradation of organic pollutants. Different modifications of TiO2 with carbon materials, transition metal-based catalysts, noble metals, and organic semiconductors have been explored to broaden its absorption spectrum and enhance charge separation, leading to increased efficiency in persulfate activation and pollutant degradation. Overall, the study also highlighted the importance of catalyst reusability and key operational parameters on the process efficiency, as well as proposed potential applications of persulfate-assisted TiO2 photocatalysis in water treatment.

Pyrite-activated persulfate for simultaneous 2,4-DCP oxidation and Cr(VI) reduction
