Questions and emotional expressions from patients and companions while participating in multidisciplinary tumor conferences in breast and gynecological cancer centers

Barbara Schellenberger et al.

Summary: This study investigated the number of questions and negative emotions expressed by breast and/or gynecologic cancer patients and companions in multidisciplinary tumor conferences, as well as the topics associated with these emotions and the patient-and context-related characteristics that determine patients' communicative behavior. The results showed that the number of questions was significantly associated with the hospital, and patients with a need for psychological support and companions asked more questions. These findings suggest that patient participation in MTCs is influenced by both patient characteristics and the hospital setting.

How shared is decision-making in multidisciplinary tumour conferences with patient participation? An observational study

Barbara Schellenberger et al.

Summary: This study investigates the extent to which patients in multidisciplinary tumour conferences (MTCs) are involved in decision-making on treatment recommendations in breast and gynecologic cancer centres in Germany. The analysis reveals limited shared decision-making (SDM) in MTCs with patient participation, highlighting the need to increase patient awareness of treatment options.

Decision-Making in Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards in Breast Cancer Care - An Observational Study

Barbara Schellenberger et al.

Summary: This study observed case discussions from multidisciplinary tumor boards (MTBs) in breast cancer centers in Germany, developing an action scheme for decision-making and analyzing conversational practices used by participants. The analysis indicated that while conventions were observed in individual phases of decision-making in MTBs, they were not consistently followed throughout the process. Developing communication standards during MTBs is suggested to optimize decision-making and enhance the quality of recommendations.
