What was the Epidemiology and Global Burden of Disease of Hip Fractures From 1990 to 2019? Results From and Additional Analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Yimin Dong et al.

Summary: Hip fractures are associated with high risk of death and decreased quality of life. Understanding the epidemiology and burden of hip fractures by country, age, gender, and sociodemographic factors is important for healthcare policymaking and clinical practice. The Global Burden of Disease study provides valuable information on the incidence and burden of hip fractures.

SARC-F and other screening tests for sarcopenia

Gulistan Bahat et al.

Summary: Screening for sarcopenia is critical for public health, and SARC-F is the most recommended tool, although it has low-moderate sensitivity. Recent studies have shown that attempts to increase its sensitivity have been successful, and it may also be used as a reasonable test for screening frailty. Other tests have also been developed or re-purposed for efficient screening, but further studies are needed to test their performance and usability in different populations and settings.

Self-perceived functioning and (instrumental) activities of daily living questionnaires after a hip fracture: Do they tell the same story?

Willeke M. Ravensbergen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the meaning of functioning to older persons after a hip fracture and assess the alignment between (I)ADL instruments and self-perceived functioning. The findings revealed that self-perceived functioning differed from the activities included in (I)ADL questionnaires and limitations in activities measured by these questionnaires did not necessarily result in worse self-perceived functioning due to various coping strategies.

Early Ambulation After Hip Fracture Surgery Is Associated With Decreased 30-Day Mortality

Jace J. Heiden et al.

Summary: Early ambulation after hip fracture surgery is significantly associated with early postoperative mortality, almost four times, independent of age and medical comorbidities. This emphasizes the importance of walking as a powerful tool to optimize mortality in hip fracture patients.

Proposition of a corrected measure of the Lawton instrumental activities of daily living score

Marine Dufournet et al.

Summary: The corrected IADL score showed excellent agreement with the usual version based on the ICC. This correction could improve clinical practice by providing a more accurate description of patients' real clinical state and benefit research on evaluating patients' functional abilities.

Factors of presenting an acute confusional syndrome after a hip fracture*

Adrian Roche-Albero et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors and prevention of acute confusional syndrome (ACS) in elderly patients with hip fractures. The results showed that cognitive impairment and surgical delay were risk factors for ACS, while performing perioperative nerve block could reduce the incidence of ACS.

Loss of skeletal muscle mass can be predicted by sarcopenia and reflects poor functional recovery at one year after surgery for geriatric hip fractures

Yu-Pin Chen et al.

Summary: In elderly hip fracture patients, there may be a significant loss of muscle mass 1 year after hip surgery, which is associated with impaired functional recovery. Patients with baseline sarcopenia had significantly higher ASM loss compared to those without.
