Pediatric meniscal injuries: Current concepts

Ajay Asokan et al.

Summary: Meniscal pathology is more common in adults due to acute trauma and chronic degeneration, but its incidence is also rising in children. The true prevalence in children is unknown as some pathologies may go undiagnosed. Increasing participation in sports at a younger age may contribute to the rising incidence. Meniscal tears can cause short-term pain and mechanical symptoms, as well as long-term compartmental chondral degeneration and early arthritis. With advancing arthroscopic techniques, preventing osteoarthritis secondary to meniscal pathology in children is possible.

KOOS-Child exhibits inadequate structural validity in a cohort of paediatric patients with ACL deficiency

Christian Fugl Hansen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the measurement properties of KOOS-Child using modern test theory models and found that it has inadequate measurement properties in children with ACL deficiency. Suggestions for improving the model fit and accuracy of KOOS-Child are presented, but the observed ceiling effects may reduce sensitivity and lead to errors.

Rationale for a Parsimonious Measure of Subjective Knee Function Among Individuals With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Rasch Analysis

Timothy Duckett et al.

Summary: The IKDC is commonly used in ACLR patients, but its validity has been unclear. This study found that the newly proposed IKDC-8 showed improved psychometric properties compared to the original IKDC. Both instruments demonstrated equivalent associations between subjective and objective knee function.

Summary: The study investigated the proteomic profiles of lateral and medial menisci from osteoarthritis patients, revealing similar protein expression patterns but differential levels of 14 ECM proteins. This information provides important insights for the treatment and diagnosis of knee joint diseases.

Symptomatic Discoid Meniscus in Children and Adolescents: A Review of 470 Cases

Catherine A. Logan et al.

Summary: Discoid meniscus is a common congenital variant, affecting around 1% to 15% of the population. This study found that in symptomatic children and adolescents, surgical treatment is often required for lateral discoid meniscus, with meniscus tearing and instability being common intraoperatively, and retear postoperatively presenting as the most common complication.

Discoid meniscus in human fetuses: A systematic review

Marco Turati et al.

Summary: Discoid meniscus is a rare variant of knee anatomy, mainly occurring in the lateral meniscus rather than the medial meniscus. The lateral meniscus is more prone to discoid shape during embryonic development, but this is not a normal stage of fetal development.

Epidemiology of Meniscal Allograft Transplantation at Children's Hospitals in the United States

Haley E. Smith et al.

Summary: In the United States, MAT was performed in only 17 out of 47 children's hospitals that conduct meniscal surgeries, with older patients, more female patients, and those with private insurance being more likely to undergo MAT compared to meniscal repair or meniscectomy. The Northeast region had the highest frequency of MAT surgeries, while the South had the lowest frequency. Further research is needed to explore differences related to sex and insurance status.
