How Europeans move: a moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and sitting time paradox in the European Union

A. Moreno-Llamas et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the interactions between physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour in a large population, taking into account major sociodemographic characteristics. The results showed that walking was the most frequently reported PA, while sitting time represented the majority of reported time. Women reported less PA and sitting time, and both total PA and sitting time increased with age. Individuals living in large urban areas reported lower PA and higher sitting times. Specific measures are needed to reduce sitting time and promote an active lifestyle.

Compensatory biomechanics and spinal loading during dynamic maneuvers in patients with chronic low back pain

Priya Nyayapati et al.

Summary: This study explores the biomechanics of sit-to-stand maneuver in chronic LBP patients and finds that different spinal disorders and pain severity can lead to unique compensatory biomechanical behaviors. The study contributes to our understanding of the relationship between spinal loading and symptoms in LBP patients.

Questionnaires for assessing self-perceived physical fitness: A systematic review

Miguel Adriano Sanchez-Lastra et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified and summarized the reliability and validity of questionnaires designed for assessing self-perceived physical fitness in elderly people. Seven questionnaires were found, five of them specifically designed for the elderly. Concurrent validity was mainly obtained by correlating the questionnaires with PF field-based tests, while high values of test-retest reliability were generally observed.

Associations between Physical Activity, Sitting Time, and Time Spent Outdoors with Mental Health during the First COVID-19 Lock Down in Austria

Sandra Haider et al.

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, engaging in more moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, reducing sedentary time, and increasing time spent outdoors were associated with better mental health outcomes, suggesting that physical activity may have a positive impact on mental well-being.

Get a Grip: Variation in Human Hand Grip Strength and Implications for Human Evolution

Ameline Bardo et al.

Summary: The study examines how hand form and function interact in modern humans to gain insight into our evolutionary past. Factors such as age, sex, hand dominance, hand shape, and engagement in activities affecting the hands influence grip strength. Females experience greater impact from age and hand shape on grip strength, while engagement in hand sports enhances grip strength in both sexes. Hand dominance asymmetries and hand function differ between males and females.
