Stressful life events, general cognitive performance, and financial capacity in healthy older adults and Alzheimer's disease patients

Vaitsa Giannouli et al.

Summary: This study assessed the influence of stressful life events on general cognition and financial capacity performance in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and healthy controls. The results showed that AD patients and healthy controls reported different numbers of stressful events before the onset of the disease. However, recent life events were found to have no causal role in the etiopathogenesis of AD, with only MMSE scores and diagnosis influencing financial capacity.

Exploring the predictors of financial impairment in Huntington's disease using the Enroll-HD dataset

Kate L. Harris et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of financial dysfunction in Huntington's disease (HD). The study found that financial impairment was common in HD patients, and cognitive and psychiatric factors were important in its development. Clinicians need to be vigilant to identify patients who may be vulnerable to financial exploitation.

Longitudinal Study of Depression on Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment and Financial Capacity

Vaitsa Giannouli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of depression on financial capacity in aMCI patients. The findings suggest that the presence and worsening of depression significantly impair financial capacity in multiple-domain aMCI patients. These findings contribute to the evidence on financial capacity assessment when depression co-exists and highlight the negative effects of worsening depressive symptoms on both overall cognitive outcomes and financial capacity.

Can educational interventions reduce susceptibility to financial fraud?

Jeremy Burke et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that short online financial education interventions can effectively reduce susceptibility to financial fraud. The effects of these interventions last for at least three months when accompanied by reminders. The interventions increase participants' knowledge, allowing them to selectively apply it. Furthermore, individuals with a higher inclination towards investing and financial experience benefit the most.

Catastrophe Theory Applied to Neuropsychological Data: Nonlinear Effects of Depression on Financial Capacity in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia

Dimitrios Stamovlasis et al.

Summary: This research investigates the impact of depression on financial capacity in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment and proposes a nonlinear model that explains this impact better than linear models. The results suggest that depression can lead to a sudden decline in financial capacity, and the nonlinear model provides a better explanation for this effect.

Neuropsychological Performance and Engagement in Estate Planning and Advance Care Planning Preparation of Patients With Neurocognitive Disorders and Healthy Older Adults: Is the Situation Alarming or Reassuring in Greece?

Vaitsa Giannouli et al.

Summary: This study examined the estate planning and advance care planning (ACP) of healthy older adults and older patients diagnosed with neurocognitive disorders in Greece. The majority of participants did not have a valid will, durable power of attorney, or written living will, regardless of their diagnostic group. Logistic regression analysis showed that various factors did not predict the presence of these legal documents.

What Biological Factors, Social Determinants, and Psychological and Behavioral Symptoms of Patients with Mild Alzheimer's Disease Correlate with Caregiver Estimations of Financial Capacity? Bringing Biases Against Older Women Into Focus

Vaitsa Giannouli et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between biological factors, social determinants, and the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and the estimations of financial capacity made by caregivers of mild AD patients in Greece. The results showed a negative correlation between financial capacity estimations and the biological sex (female) of the patients, as well as a negative correlation between BPSD (measured with NPI) and financial capacity estimations. Delusions-hallucinations were reported in all males. No correlations were found between financial capacity estimations, actual cognitive and financial capacity performance, and other included biological and social characteristics of the patients and their caregivers.

Financial Incapacity of Patients with Mild Alzheimer's Disease: What Neurologists Need to Know about Where the Impairment Lies

Vaitsa Giannouli et al.

Summary: Research has shown that cognitive factors can predict financial incapacity in patients with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, the score of one item from the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was found to be the best predictor of financial capacity in the AD patients. This study emphasizes the importance of paying attention to cognitive assessments in order to prevent financial exploitation cases.

Vaitsa Giannouli et al.

Summary: This study examined the financial capacity of patients with vascular dementia and the impact of depression on it. The results indicated that cognitive functioning and financial capacity of VaD patients are severely impaired, with depression having a negative influence on financial capacity. Depression and mood disorders should be considered in future research with older adults and larger VaD populations.
