Analysis of Frailty Syndrome in Men with Metastatic Prostate Cancer: A Scoping Review

Mayra Alejandra Mafla-Espana et al.

Summary: Most elderly patients with metastatic prostate cancer should undergo a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) to identify frailty syndrome, which is crucial for clinical decisions. Frailty is associated with lower quality of life and can affect the feasibility and side effects of treatments. Evaluation of frailty syndrome should be considered in clinical decision-making and when selecting the most appropriate active treatment for increased survival.

Adherence to Oral Treatments in Older Patients with Advanced Prostate Cancer, the ADHERE Study: A Prospective Trial of the Meet-URO Network

Pasquale Rescigno et al.

Summary: This article evaluates adherence to abiraterone and enzalutamide in older patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. The study finds that non-adherence rate is slightly higher with abiraterone than with enzalutamide, and it correlates with the geriatric G8 score. Forgetfulness may be a potential barrier for enzalutamide.

Evaluating Patterns and Factors Related to Sleep Disturbances in Prostate Cancer Patients

Shalini Mondal et al.

Summary: This study evaluated sleep disturbances in prostate cancer patients, especially those receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). The results showed that ADT patients had poorer sleep quality, longer sleep duration, higher sleep fragmentation, and longer daytime napping compared to ADT-naive patients.

Summary: This study found a significant association between baseline frailty and HRQOL in prostate cancer patients, as well as significant differences in baseline frailty and HRQOL between localized and metastatic diseases. Frailty was associated with worse quality of life in patients with PC.

Hormonal Therapy for Prostate Cancer

Kunal Desai et al.

Summary: Huggins and Hodges demonstrated the therapeutic effect of gonadal testosterone deprivation in the 1940s, leading to the concept of prostate cancer being highly androgen-dependent. Since then, hormonal therapy has evolved from gonadal testosterone deprivation to inhibiting extragonadal androgens, to directly binding and inhibiting the androgen receptor. Today's standard of care for advanced prostate cancer includes gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists and androgen receptor antagonists.

Sarcopenia: prevalence, associated factors, and the risk of mortality and disability in Japanese older adults

Akihiko Kitamura et al.

Summary: This study found that Japanese older adults meeting Asian criteria for sarcopenia had increased risks of all-cause mortality and disability. Sarcopenia-related factors other than ageing included hypoalbuminaemia, cognitive impairment, low activity, and depressed mood. Individuals with sarcopenia had higher risks of mortality and incident disability, with different factors influencing men and women.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Association of Second-generation Antiandrogens With Depression Among Patients With Prostate Cancer

Malgorzata K. Nowakowska et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study found that patients with prostate cancer who received second-generation antiandrogens had a significantly higher risk of depression compared with those who received traditional hormone therapy or no hormone therapy at all. The risk was especially elevated among those with metastatic disease.

Associations between frailty and cancer-specific mortality among older women with breast cancer

Connie H. Yan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between pre-diagnosis frailty and risks of breast cancer-specific and all-cause mortality in older women. Results showed that higher degrees of frailty were associated with higher risks of all-cause mortality, but not breast cancer-specific mortality.

Cognition and depression effects of androgen receptor axis-targeted drugs in men with prostate cancer: A systematic review

Anupam Batra et al.

Summary: Novel androgen receptor axis-targeting drugs (ARATs) have shown potential impact on cognition and emotional status in men with metastatic prostate cancer. Limited data is available on the cognitive effects of ARATs, while more comprehensive research has been conducted on their effects on depression. Abiraterone may improve cognitive functioning, while ARATs in general can reduce depressive symptoms.
