The Relationship Between Atrial Fibrillation, Mitral Regurgitation, and Heart Failure Subtype: The ARIC Study

Sameer Arora et al.

Summary: This study found that the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) increases with the severity of mitral regurgitation (MR) in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF), especially in those with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Furthermore, AF is associated with increased 1-year mortality only in patients with HFpEF and concomitant moderate/severe MR.

Derivation and Validation of a Clinical Score for Predicting Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation in Noncardiac Elective Surgery (the HART Score)

Giulia Stronati et al.

Summary: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in the surgical setting, with an incidence of about 2%. Hypertension, age, surgery risk, and thyroid dysfunction were identified as independent predictors of POAF. A risk score incorporating these predictors, called the Hypertension, Age, surgery Risk, and Thyroid dysfunction score, can effectively assess the risk of POAF and has good sensitivity and specificity.

Progression of Mitral Regurgitation in Rheumatic Valve Disease: Role of Left Atrial Remodeling

Nayana F. A. Gomes et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the incidence and predictors of mitral regurgitation (MR) progression in patients with rheumatic heart disease (RHD). The results showed that age and left atrial volume were predictors of MR progression in RHD patients. The study also suggested that left atrial enlargement may play a role in the link between primary MR and secondary MR in RHD patients.

Predicting Late Recurrence of Atrial Fibrillation After Radiofrequency Ablation in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: Comparison of C2HEST and HATCH Scores

Jingjing Han et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the risk of recurrence in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) after radiofrequency ablation and predict the risk of recurrence using C2HEST and HATCH scores. The results showed that both C2HEST and HATCH scores were significantly associated with the risk of late recurrence after radiofrequency ablation of AF. Hypertension and heart failure were the main contributing factors to postoperative recurrence after AF.

Summary: The study evaluated the predictive value of the MVP ECG risk score for diagnosing atrial fibrillation in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Results showed that the MVP ECG risk score had high sensitivity and specificity for predicting in-hospital and long-term atrial fibrillation diagnoses.

Atrial fibrillation as a preoperative risk factor predicts long-term mortality in elderly patients without heart failure and undergoing hip fracture surgery

Ahmet Lutfullah Orhan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term mortality of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients above 65 years of age undergoing hip fracture surgery without a history of heart failure. The results showed that AF was an independent predictor for long-term death in this patient population, especially in the absence of heart failure.

Impact of atrial mitral and tricuspid regurgitation on atrial fibrillation recurrence after ablation

Keijiro Nakamura et al.

Summary: The study found that recurrence of AF after ablation was associated with E/e', LAVI, and extensive FTR. Additionally, the combination of FTR and FMR significantly worsened AF prognosis. The severity of TR was correlated with age, NT-proBNP, and LAVI.

Heather A. Smith et al.

Summary: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common complication after thoracic surgery, which can be prevented with prophylactic amiodarone in high-risk individuals. Risk prediction models have been developed, but further multicenter clinical trials are needed to assess the effectiveness of prophylaxis in high-risk patients.

Summary: Atrial fibrillation is a common complication after cardiac surgery, and the POAF, CHA2DS2-VASc, and HATCH scores have been used to predict its occurrence. A new risk score named COM-AF was developed in this study, which showed better predictive ability than the existing scores.
