Heart rate recovery to assess fitness: comparison of different calculation methods in a large cross-sectional study

Denis Mongin et al.

Summary: This study proposes a cross-sectional study based on 980 maximal effort tests to investigate the effect of heart rate recovery (HRR) calculation methods on its association with cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). The results show that there is no significant association between HRR indices based on exponential regression and CRF. However, other HRR indices are associated with CRF when t(0) is at least 1 minute, with the strongest association observed at t(0) = 2 minutes for females and t(0) = 3 minutes for males.

Performance and Recovery of Well-Trained Younger and Older Athletes during Different HIIT Protocols

Laura Hottenrott et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the performance and recovery of younger and older athletes following different high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols. The results showed that there were no significant differences in metabolic, cardiovascular, and subjective recovery between the two age groups. This suggests that age does not affect recovery following HIIT.

The anaerobic threshold: 50+years of controversy

David C. Poole et al.

Summary: The anaerobic threshold (AT) is a controversial concept in exercise physiology and medicine, originally thought to be caused by muscle anoxia but now understood to be a response to increased glycolytic flux. Lactate is now appreciated as an important energy source and signaling molecule, with non-invasive estimation of LT using the gas exchange threshold remaining important in exercise training and in the clinic.

Overshoot of the Respiratory Exchange Ratio during Recovery from Maximal Exercise Testing in Kidney Transplant Recipients

Alessandro Patti et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the overshoot of the respiratory exchange ratio (RER) during recovery from exercise is more pronounced in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs), showing significant correlations with patient fitness and cardiorespiratory efficiency. The RER overshoot parameter identified in this population, RER mag, may serve as a meaningful prognostic marker in cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) evaluations, suggesting potential improvements in risk stratifications for KTRs and other chronic diseases.
