Utilization of Saline Water Enhances Lipid Accumulation in Green Microalgae for the Sustainable Production of Biodiesel

Maria Hasnain et al.

Summary: The effect of salinity on the growth, production of bio-relevant molecules, and lipid yields of green microalgae was investigated. The results showed that increasing salinity led to a decrease in algal biomass and content of carbohydrates, proteins, and chlorophyll. However, it significantly increased the lipid content. Furthermore, the biofuels produced from the investigated algal species met the standards for biodiesel.

Influence of salinity and nitrogen in dark onDunaliella tertiolecta'slipid and carbohydrate productivity

Muhammad Rizwan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of salt and nitrogen on lipid and carbohydrate production in marine microalgae Dunaliella tertiolecta. The results showed that low salinity was most favorable for lipid content and productivity, while absence of salinity led to the highest carbohydrate content and productivity. Nitrogen stress increased the lipid and carbohydrate contents, but did not significantly affect the productivities.

Effects of Ultrasonic and Microwave Pretreatment on Lipid Extraction of Microalgae and Methane Production from the Residual Extracted Biomass

Magdalena Rokicka et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the lipid extraction from microalgae cells of Botryococcus braunii and Chlorella vulgaris after ultrasonic and microwave pretreatment. Microwave pretreatment was found to be more effective in enhancing lipid extraction efficiency. Anaerobic digestion of the residual extracted biomass showed a decrease in methane production compared to non-lipid-extracted feedstock. However, the residual extracted biomass can still be a suitable method for energy recovery from microalgae.
