Responses of Soybean to Selected Abiotic Stresses-Photoperiod, Temperature and Water

Mariola Staniak et al.

Summary: The sharp increase in soybean acreage is driven by the demand for edible oil and feed protein. However, its high heat requirements and response to photoperiod limit its cultivation range. Global warming allows the range to be shifted, but droughts and high temperatures still restrict crop production. This review paper examines how soybean responds to environmental stresses and presents research findings.

Silver lining to a climate crisis in multiple prospects for alleviating crop waterlogging under future climates

Ke Liu et al.

Summary: Extreme weather events pose a threat to food security, especially due to crop waterlogging, but there is a lack of global assessments on its impacts. This study develops a paradigm that identifies common stress patterns caused by waterlogging and uses a farming systems model to understand future changes. The findings suggest that yield penalties caused by waterlogging will increase in the future, but adaptations such as altering sowing time and using waterlogging-tolerant genotypes can help mitigate the losses.

Agro-economic prospects for expanding soybean production beyond its current northerly limit in Europe

Kathleen Karges et al.

Summary: The study found that feed-grade soybean cultivars were better adapted to the central European climate compared to food-grade cultivars, providing higher and more stable yields. Irrigation increased soybean grain yields by an average of 41%, with no additional irrigation required in years with sufficient rainfall. Gross margins for organic soybean were higher than other crops, indicating a large agro-economic potential for soybean cultivation in central Europe as a novel grain legume crop.

Response of a Diverse European Soybean Collection to Short Duration and Long Duration Drought Stress

Aamir Saleem et al.

Summary: Drought causes significant damage to soybean crops, and Europe's demand for soybean is growing while its own production is insufficient. Therefore, the selection and breeding of soybean cultivars adapted to European growth conditions is urgently needed.

Effects of Fertilizer Level and Intercropping Planting Pattern with Corn on the Yield-Related Traits and Insect Community of Soybean

Likun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of intercropping and fertilizer reduction on soybean yield. The results showed that both fertilizer reduction and intercropping reduced the biomass, 100-seed weight, and yield of soybean. Intercropping had a greater effect on yield. Fertilizer reduction decreased the activities of nitrogen-metabolism-related enzymes in soybean. Intercropping planting patterns significantly increased the diversity of the insect community and reduced the population of important pests.

Economic Analysis of Biochar Use in Soybean Production in Poland

Agnieszka Ewa Latawiec et al.

Summary: The study found that in Poland, the use of biochar at rates of 40, 60, and 80 t/ha is unprofitable compared to traditional soil amendment methods. The economic viability of biochar requires specific breakeven prices, and the payback period for doses of 40 and 60 Mg/ha is estimated to be three years.

Effect of Nitrogen Fertilisation and Inoculation with Bradyrhizobium japonicum on the Fatty Acid Profile of Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) Seeds

Ewa Szpunar-Krok et al.

Summary: This study confirmed the genetic determinants of fatty acid composition in soybean seeds and the impact of nitrogen fertilizer and Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculation on their accumulation levels. Proper nitrogen levels and inoculation can reduce the levels of harmful fatty acids for heart health.

Leaf photosynthesis and senescence in heated and droughted field-grown soybean with contrasting seed protein concentration

Veronica V. Ergo et al.

Summary: Soybean plants under heat and drought stress exhibit reduced photosynthesis, carbohydrate production, and accelerated leaf senescence, leading to a shorter filling period. The impact of drought on photosynthesis is more pronounced than that of heat stress, and high protein genotypes do not necessarily show earlier leaf senescence or a shortened filling period.
