Crop yield response to long-term reduced tillage in a conventional and organic farming system on a sandy loam soil

Derk van Balen et al.

Summary: This paper describes the long-term effects of practicing reduced tillage for ten years on crop yields in both conventional and organic farming systems. The study found that reduced tillage systems can provide similar or higher marketable yields compared to conventional tillage for most crops. However, there were yield reductions in carrot and cabbage, which could be partially attributed to negative effects of crop residues. The results suggest that crop residue management and seedbed preparation are important challenges in reduced tillage systems.

Are active and former floodplain soils of the lower middle Elbe similar? A study of soil characteristics and possible implications for forest restoration

Lizeth K. Vasconez Navas et al.

Summary: Analyzing soil properties and processes in floodplains is important for floodplain restoration measures. This study found that hydrogeomorphology influences soil physicochemical properties and formation processes in hardwood floodplain forests. Active floodplain areas have stronger connection to river hydrology, resulting in increased phosphorous availability. However, disconnected floodplain areas have higher carbon and nitrogen content. These findings improve our understanding of soil dynamics and can guide floodplain restoration measures based on soil nutrient distribution.

Floodplain forest soil series along the naturally wandering gravel-bed river in temperate submontane altitudes

Petra Rychtecka et al.

Summary: This study classified the soil conditions of a floodplain temperate forest based on the geo-biocoenological approach, analyzing the chemical and hydrophysical properties. The results showed that the soil series were clearly divided based on the fluvial landforms. The study also revealed significant differences in soil conditions between the bar and terrace soil series, indicating variations in site conditions for floodplain vegetation development.

Carbon storage in an arable soil combining field measurements, aggregate turnover modeling and climate scenarios

Shaojun Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different fertilization practices on soil structure and aggregate organic carbon (OC) stocks. The results show that under a wetter climate and increasing soil moisture, soil OC stocks will increase in all three treatments, with the strongest increase under the combined manure and chemical fertilization treatment. Furthermore, changes in microaggregate OC stocks contribute significantly to the overall change in total SOC stocks.

Weed seed burial as affected by mouldboard design parameters, ploughing depth and speed: DEM simulations and experimental validation

Hadi Azimi-Nejadian et al.

Summary: The discrete element method (DEM) was used to model and optimize the design parameters of a tillage tool, focusing on weed seed burial and tillage forces. Through 64 DEM simulations and response surface methodology, the optimal combination of design parameters was determined. Experimental validation showed that the simulated values were within an acceptable range of error compared to the measured values.

Drivers of the amount of organic carbon protected inside soil aggregates estimated by crushing: A meta-analysis

Tchodjowie P. Kpemoua et al.

Summary: Given the importance of soil organic carbon (SOC) in climate regulation, understanding the mechanisms of SOC protection from decomposition is crucial. This study found that crushing soil aggregates led to enhanced carbon mineralization compared to intact aggregates, suggesting the mineralization of a previously protected pool of organic carbon. The amount of protected SOC depended on soil characteristics and aggregate size. Standardizing experimental conditions is needed to better understand the processes and drivers of SOC protection inside aggregates.

Effects of shallow non-inversion tillage on sandy loam soil properties and winter rye yield in organic farming

Michael Hofbauer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential climate change adaptation measure of reduced tillage for organic farming in a relatively dry region. The results showed that shallow ring cutter tillage on sandy loam soil led to increased soil bulk density, decreased available water capacity, and reduced crop yield.

Subsoiling and plowing rotation increase soil C and N storage and crop yield on a semiarid Loess Plateau

Xingyu Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that a rotation of subsoiling and plowing had positive effects on water-stable aggregates, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen storage, and crop yield compared to continuous subsoiling and plowing. This practice was more effective in improving and sustaining nutrient storage and crop production in a winter wheat-fallow-spring maize rotation field.

Fertilizer quality and labile soil organic matter fractions are vital for organic carbon sequestration in temperate arable soils within a long-term trial in Switzerland

Marius Mayer et al.

Summary: Agricultural management practices have led to the loss of soil organic matter and reduced soil fertility. This study examines the impact of different farming systems on the temporal dynamics of soil organic matter fractions. The findings highlight the importance of sustainable management practices and careful management of labile organic matter fractions for long-term soil fertility.

The adsorption capacity of root exudate organic carbon onto clay mineral surface changes depending on clay mineral types and organic carbon composition

Georges Martial Ndzana et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of root exudate organic compounds by clay minerals. The results show that clay minerals have a higher adsorption capacity for oxalic acid compared to glucose. The adsorption process modifies the crystalline structure of clay minerals and traps the organic compounds in micropores. These findings are of great significance in understanding the role of clay minerals in stabilizing root exudate organic compounds.

The effect of contrasting soil textures on the efficiency of alternate wetting-drying to reduce water use and global warming potential

Miranti Ariani et al.

Summary: The research found that using alternate wetting-drying (AWD) technique can reduce water use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from rice fields. AWD implementation in both silt loam and silty clay soils resulted in reduced water use, with more significant effects observed in silt loam soil. Addition of biochar-compost further reduced water use. Conducting studies in different seasons and locations can provide a wider understanding for decision-makers regarding GHG mitigation and water conservation in rice systems.

Summary: Deep tillage (DT) can effectively improve soil quality by increasing soil aggregates and soil organic carbon content, benefit crop root extension, and enhance nutrient uptake, resulting in increased tobacco yield and economic benefits. Meanwhile, intermittent deep tillage is more conducive to improving dryland crop yield in Southern China, providing a potential method for sustainable agricultural development.
