Improved Yield Prediction of Winter Wheat Using a Novel Two-Dimensional Deep Regression Neural Network Trained via Remote Sensing

Giorgio Morales et al.

Summary: In recent years, the use of remotely sensed and on-ground observations, combined with machine learning techniques, has greatly improved the accuracy of crop yield estimations. This study introduces a novel approach, using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), to further enhance yield prediction by leveraging the spatial information of crop fields. The proposed method, named Hyper3DNetReg, takes multi-channel input and produces a two-dimensional raster output, which represents the predicted yield values. By aggregating overlapping yield prediction patches obtained throughout the field, a yield prediction map is generated. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed methodology over five compared methods, including Bayesian multiple linear regression, standard multiple linear regression, random forest, AdaBoost ensemble of feedforward networks, stacked autoencoder, and two other CNN architectures.

Assessing performance of empirical models for forecasting crop responses to variable fertilizer rates using on-farm precision experimentation

Paul B. Hegedus et al.

Summary: Data-driven decision making in agriculture can be enhanced by using precision agriculture technologies to gather data and make informed decisions. Different models can be used to predict crop responses and net returns, with the random forest regression model typically providing the most accurate forecasts.

Key research challenges to supporting farm transitions to agroecology in advanced economies. A review

Lorene Prost et al.

Summary: In response to sustainability issues in agriculture in advanced economies, there is a growing relevance of agroecology in scientific, political, and social debates. This article reviews the literature on farm transitions to agroecology in advanced economies, identifying key research challenges and suggesting innovative research paths. The findings suggest the need for research that includes farm-level exploration and definition of desired futures, more holistic and dynamic assessment frameworks, and a focus on the dynamics of change processes during transitions.

Rationale for field-specific on-farm precision experimentation

Paul B. Hegedus et al.

Summary: This study aimed to provide site-specific knowledge base through modern precision agriculture technologies, quantify the spatiotemporal variation of crop responses, and identify the variables driving crop production, quality, and farmer net-return. The results showed that the degree of crop response varied across time and space, the drivers of net-return varied among fields and years, indicating the need for specific field-based management decisions. On-farm experimentation can help farmers identify these drivers and make informed management decisions.

Spatial variability of crop responses to agronomic inputs in on-farm precision experimentation

R. G. Trevisan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial variability of optimal input rates in cornfields and found significant spatial heterogeneity of model parameters in all four fields evaluated. The use of GWR models resulted in a better fit compared to non-spatial global models, with an average potential gain of $65.00 ha(-1) from using optimized uniform rates of seed and nitrogen.

Statistical models of yield in on-farm precision experimentation

P. Paccioretti et al.

Summary: This study compared three statistical models to estimate crop responses from eight OFPEs: (a) linear regression (LR) with spatially correlated errors, (b) Bayesian regression (BR) with random site effects, and (c) random forest regression (RF) with kriged residuals. Modeling spatial correlation and including plot covariates improved yield predictions. BR and RF outperformed LR in site-specific prediction accuracy, with BR predictions having lower predictive uncertainty than RF predictions. The Bayesian model for spatial data is a useful tool to process OFPE data and provides prediction uncertainty measures related to site-specific yield responses.
