The One-Hundred-Year Anniversary of the Discovery of the Sunshine Vitamin D3: Historical, Personal Experience and Evidence-Based Perspectives

Michael F. F. Holick

Summary: McCollum discovered a fat-soluble nutrient with antirachitic activity and no vitamin A activity, which he named vitamin D. This vitamin has had significant health benefits for children and adults. This review explores the evolution and importance of vitamin D in land vertebrates, beginning with the connection between sunlight, vitamin D production, and the prevention of rickets.

Screening for Type 1 Diabetes in the General Population: A Status Report and Perspective

Emily K. Sims et al.

Summary: Most screening programs for type 1 diabetes identify individuals at risk through relatives, but many patients don't have a family history. Recent advancements in disease-modifying therapies have sparked interest in population screening. Existing programs rely on genetic or autoantibody screening, which have provided valuable insights into disease progression and screening timing.

Utility of Diabetes Type-Specific Genetic Risk Scores for the Classification of Diabetes Type Among Multiethnic Youth

Richard A. Oram et al.

Summary: This study assessed the utility of genetic risk scores (GRS) in classifying diabetes type among racially/ethnically diverse youth. The results showed that GRS for type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) were strong independent predictors of etiologic type. Discrimination was similar across all racial/ethnic groups but score distribution varied. Clustering by combined genetic risk improved the prediction of diabetes type.

Pancreatic shear wave elastography in children with type 1 diabetes: relation to diabetes duration, glycemic indices, fasting C-peptide and diabetic complications

Nouran Yousef Salah et al.

Summary: Pancreatic shear wave elastography (SWE) changes significantly with the duration of type 1 diabetes, being lowest in those with recent-onset type 1 diabetes and highest in those with long-standing type 1 diabetes, particularly in patients with diabetic nephropathy and neuropathy. SWE is positively correlated with diabetes duration and negatively correlated with fasting C-peptide, and it is significantly related to diabetic complications.

Vitamin D and Beta Cells in Type 1 Diabetes: A Systematic Review

Josephine Yu et al.

Summary: The prevalence of type 1 diabetes is rising steadily and vitamin D may contribute to this increase. This systematic review examined studies on vitamin D and type 1 diabetes, finding strong associations between low vitamin D levels and type 1 diabetes. Animal studies and human trials also suggest that vitamin D treatment or supplementation can be beneficial in reducing the risk of type 1 diabetes. Maintaining optimal circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels may help to prevent or delay the development of type 1 diabetes.

Stefano Passanisi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the pediatric population of the southern Italian region of Calabria from 2019 to 2021. The study revealed a relatively high incidence of T1D in the region, with a significant increasing trend over the past two years.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus as a disease of the β-cell (do not blame the immune system?)

Bart O. Roep et al.

Summary: Research suggests that type 1 diabetes mellitus is triggered by issues with beta-cells themselves, rather than solely autoimmune attacks on healthy cells. Therefore, treatment should focus on improving the health and function of beta cells, along with immunotherapy, to effectively delay disease progression.

Why is the Incidence of Type 1 Diabetes Increasing?

Alexia G. Abela et al.

Summary: Type 1 diabetes is a complex disease with increasing incidence worldwide, with a variety of factors including genetic, environmental, lifestyle, and early life factors implicated in its development. In addition to genetic factors, obesity, insulin resistance, cholesterol, early life factors, environmental pollutants, and gut microbiome are all potentially associated with type 1 diabetes. Research into these factors not only sheds light on the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes, but also offers insights into potential preventive strategies.
