Clinical Effectiveness of Vestibular Shields in Orthodontic Treatment: A Scoping Review

Chaypat Simsuchin et al.

Summary: This systematic literature search aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of vestibular shields (VSs) in orthodontic treatment for children. The search included three databases and a total of five studies were selected for analysis. The results suggest that VSs may have potential impacts on orthodontic treatment, lips, and dental arches, but more high-quality studies are needed to confirm these effects.

Rapid maxillary expansion vs slow maxillary expansion in patients with cleft lip and/or palate: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Jonathan Luyten et al.

Summary: This study compared the dentoalveolar outcomes of slow maxillary expansion (SME) and rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) before secondary alveolar bone grafting. The results showed that both SME and RME achieved similar posterior expansion, but SME had a greater anterior differential expansion. The effects on dental tipping were inconclusive.

Clinical effectiveness of the Eruption Guidance Appliances in treating malocclusion in the mixed dentition: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Shuying Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of eruption guidance appliances (EGAs) in treating malocclusion in the early mixed dentition. The results showed that EGAs treatment effectively corrected overjet and overbite in the short term, with favorable dentoalveolar and skeletal changes. However, there was a relapse in overbite after the retention period. High-quality and long-term studies are needed to determine the long-term effectiveness of EGAs treatment.

The effectiveness of the early orthodontic correction of functional unilateral posterior crossbite in the mixed dentition period: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Danya Hassan Alsawaf et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the effectiveness of early intervention methods for functional unilateral posterior crossbites in children between the ages of 6 and 12 years. The results showed that the quad-helix (QH) was more effective than expansion plates (EP) in increasing intermolar width and reducing treatment time. However, there was no significant difference in relapse rate and mandibular midline correction between the two methods. Early expansion treatment also successfully corrected functional unilateral posterior crossbites. More randomized controlled trials are needed to further evaluate the effects of different expansion appliances.

Interdisciplinary Approach for the Treatment of Complex Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate With Missing Premaxilla

Summary: Complex craniofacial deformities such as complete bilateral cleft lip and palate require interdisciplinary approach for proper diagnosis and treatment. Conventional prosthodontic treatment combined with orthodontic preparation is a viable option for managing multiple missing teeth in cleft lip and palate.

Effects of maxillary expansion on hearing and voice function in non-cleft lip palate and cleft lip palate patients with transverse maxillary deficiency: a multicentric randomized controlled trial

Harpreet Singh et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of rapid maxillary expansion on hearing and voice function in children with cleft and non-cleft lip palate. The results showed that rapid maxillary expansion treatment significantly improved hearing levels and middle ear volumes for both groups, and also had a significant influence on voice quality in non-cleft patients, but not in cleft patients.

Early Orthodontic Treatments of Unilateral Posterior Crossbite: A Systematic Review

Francesco Caroccia et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of orthodontic treatments on unilateral posterior crossbite (UPXB) in primary and early mixed dentition, with 11 studies included. The quality of the studies was found to be higher compared to previous reviews, but issues such as heterogeneity of treatments and measurement strategies limit the ability to provide reliable scientific evidence on the most effective UPXB treatment.

Maxillary dentoskeletal outcomes of the expander with differential opening and the fan-type expander: a randomized controlled trial

Camila Massaro et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of the expander with differential opening (EDO) and the fan-type expander (FE) on maxillary dentoskeletal outcomes. EDO produced greater transverse skeletal expansion, while FE had better results in intermolar distance changes and canine buccal inclination.
