Model for developing context-sensitive responses to vulnerability in research: managing ethical dilemmas faced by frontline research staff in Kenya

Sassy Molyneux et al.

Summary: Health research in low-resource settings often involves vulnerable populations. Research teams should support frontline staff in identifying and addressing ethical dilemmas through regular cross-team ethics reflection sessions. Initiatives to support staff in dealing with ethical issues should complement existing institutional ethics review and health and safety policies.

A systematic review on ethical challenges of 'field' research in low-income and middle-income countries: respect, justice and beneficence for research staff?

Janina Isabel Steinert et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified various ethical challenges that research staff may face in LMICs, including role conflicts, feelings of guilt, sexual harassment, safety risks, and political repression. The current ethical standards need urgent amendments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 8.8 on 'safe and secure working environments' and protect research staff from harm.

Vulnerability, Agency, and the Research Encounter: Family Members' Experiences and Perceptions of Participating in an Observational Clinical Study in Kenya

Scholastica M. Zakayo et al.

Summary: Insights from research participants play a key role in strengthening the design and oversight of pediatric clinical research. Research processes may inadvertently add to hidden burdens for families, highlighting the importance of considering participants' vulnerability. Participants' agency should be actively recognized and protected in constrained research contexts.

Emotional distress among frontline research staff

Megan Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study found that frontline research staff in Eswatini commonly experience emotional distress, which is exacerbated by the high rates of HIV, violence, and poverty in the region. The qualities study staff are often hired for, such as empathy and emotional intelligence, may also contribute to their distress. Recommendations for addressing this emotional distress included regular meetings with a trained counselor and incorporating team-building or debriefing conversations into the normal workweek.

Institutional Review Board Preparedness for Disaster Research: a Practical Approach

Joan P. Packenham et al.

Summary: As disasters become more common, there is a growing interest in disaster research to understand their impact on health and the environment. However, there is a lack of best practices for Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) in reviewing disaster research protocols. It is important for IRBs and investigators to collaboratively address ethical concerns and protect the welfare of individuals and communities affected by disasters.
