Abusive head trauma in children: radiographs of the skull do not provide additional information in the diagnosis of skull fracture when multiplanar computed tomography with three-dimensional reconstructions is available

Laura Cosgrave et al.

Summary: This study investigated the accuracy of multiplanar CT with 3-D reconstructions alone in diagnosing skull fractures in suspected physical abuse imaging. The results showed that using multiplanar CT with 3-D reconstructions alone was as accurate as performing both CT and skull radiography, while performing skull radiography alone was less accurate.

Neonatal Abusive Head Trauma without External Injuries: Suspicion Improves Diagnosis

Seokwon Yoon et al.

Summary: The term shaken baby syndrome has been replaced by abusive head trauma (AHT) for its mechanism of injury. Diagnosis of AHT remains a challenge when parents do not report trauma in preverbal infants. Reasonable suspicion of abuse, in combination with thorough physical examination, neuroimaging, and skilled neuroradiologist, can improve diagnosis and help victims in a timely manner.

Next Generation Sequencing after Invasive Prenatal Testing in Fetuses with Congenital Malformations: Prenatal or Neonatal Investigation

Alexandra Emms et al.

Summary: Congenital malformations diagnosed by ultrasound screening have an underlying genetic cause in many cases. Next generation sequencing as a secondary prenatal genetic test offers additional diagnostic yield for congenital abnormalities potentially associated with genetic causes, especially in cases involving cardiac and neurological anomalies, large nuchal translucency, and non-immune fetal hydrops. The use of exome sequencing has shown significant incremental yield in single-system anomalies, making it a valuable tool for routine clinical care in fetuses with congenital abnormalities.

A single NGS-based assay covering the entire genomic sequence of the DMD gene facilitates diagnostic and newborn screening confirmatory testing

Babi R. R. Nallamilli et al.

Summary: The study developed a single-step assay based on next-generation sequencing for molecular diagnosis of DMD and BMD. By sequencing the entire DMD gene, the assay can effectively detect various copy number and sequence variants, with important implications for accurate breakpoint detection of CNVs.

Next-generation sequencing technologies: An overview

Taishan Hu et al.

Summary: This review discusses the development and advantages or disadvantages of short-read and long-read sequencing technologies, pointing out that emerging developments for third-generation technologies hold promise for the next wave of sequencing evolution, with the co-existence of longer read lengths and high accuracy.

Abusive head trauma: neuroimaging mimics and diagnostic complexities

Jai Sidpra et al.

Summary: Traumatic brain injury, particularly abusive head trauma, is a significant cause of childhood deaths. Neuroimaging is crucial for diagnosis, but the nonspecific nature of findings can lead to misdiagnosis, given the lack of pathognomonic patterns and clear diagnostic criteria. This poses a risk for overlooking other conditions mimicking abusive head trauma.

Evolving forensic controversies in child abuse imaging

Cory M. Pfeifer

Summary: Child abuse is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in pediatric patients. Despite well-defined evidence of clinical and imaging indicators of child abuse, there are denialists who use unaccepted scientific positions based on literature they themselves have authored. It is important to highlight the trends in recent legal proceedings to emphasize the significance of consensus statements and professional ethics in child abuse imaging.
