Antibiotic treatment of bacterial vaginosis to prevent preterm delivery: Systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis

Mark A. Klebanoff et al.

Summary: Using individual participant data (IPD), this study investigated whether treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV) during pregnancy reduced the risk of preterm delivery (PTD). The results showed that clindamycin treatment was beneficial in studies providing IPD, but when data from studies without IPD were imputed, neither metronidazole nor clindamycin treatment reduced the risk of PTD or prolonged pregnancy. The timing of treatment and history of PTD did not affect treatment efficacy.

Global prevalence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection in pregnant women: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Kosar Vaezzadeh et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis estimated the global and regional prevalence of gonorrhoea in pregnant women. The study found a worldwide prevalence of 1.85%, with the highest rates in Africa (3.53%) and the lowest rates in Europe (0.52%). High prevalence was observed among low-income countries, pregnant women with HIV, and pregnant women under 20 years old. Immediate public health measures are needed to reduce the risk of infection, and further data collection efforts at national and regional levels should be expanded.

Frequency and Molecular Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus from Placenta of Mothers with Term and Preterm Deliveries

Hafiz Muhammad Umer Farooqi et al.

Summary: The presence of Staphylococcus aureus in placental samples may be associated with preterm delivery. Antimicrobial susceptibility and MRSA screening showed a higher inclination towards preterm samples. Therefore, judicious use of antibiotics during pregnancy may help prevent preterm births.

Genital Mycoplasmas and Biomarkers of Inflammation and Their Association With Spontaneous Preterm Birth and Preterm Prelabor Rupture of Membranes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Nathalia M. Noda-Nicolau et al.

Summary: This study determined the association between genital mycoplasmas and adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm labor, preterm birth, and preterm prelabor rupture of membranes. The results showed that women with these adverse pregnancy outcomes had significantly higher odds of presence with genital mycoplasmas compared to women who delivered at term.

Late-Onset Sepsis Among Very Preterm Infants

Dustin D. Flannery et al.

Summary: This study examines the epidemiology, microbiology, and outcomes of late-onset sepsis among very preterm infants in the United States. The findings reveal a significant proportion of infants suffering from late-onset sepsis, particularly those born at the lowest gestational ages. Infected infants have higher mortality rates and survivors are at increased risk of technology-dependent chronic morbidities.

Uterine macrophages as treatment targets for therapy of premature rupture of membranes by modified ADSC-EVs through a circRNA/miRNA/NF-κB pathway

Summary: Our study reveals that circRNA plays a role in regulating the activation of M1 macrophages and secretion of matrix metalloproteinases through the modulation of miR-1931 and NF-κB pathway. In the PROM model, EVs loaded with siRNAs targeting circRNAs can accelerate PROM occurrence.

Adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes associated with Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Marinjho Emely Jonduo et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigates the role of genital mycoplasmas in adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, alone or in combination with bacterial vaginosis (BV). The available literature does not provide conclusive evidence, highlighting the need for future studies that consider the interaction between genital mycoplasmas and the vaginal microbiome.

Adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes associated with Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Marinjho Emely Jonduo et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigates the role of genital mycoplasmas in adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. The findings suggest that Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, and Ureaplasma parvum may be associated with preterm birth, low birth weight, premature rupture of membranes, spontaneous abortion, and perinatal or neonatal death.

Placental microbial-metabolite profiles and inflammatory mechanisms associated with preterm birth

Kerry M. Parris et al.

Summary: This article discusses the potential significance of the placental microbiome and microbiome-metabolite interactions in immune responses and pregnancy outcomes, with a focus on pathomechanisms of placental inflammatory responses and predictive markers for preterm birth. It also provides an overview of the current understanding of the placental microbiome and metabolome in human pregnancy, evaluating the evidence for its existence and its role in fetomaternal inflammatory responses leading to preterm birth.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae lipids license TLR-4 for activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and autophagy to evoke a proinflammatory response

H. Luo et al.

Summary: Mycoplasma pneumoniae lipids serve as proinflammatory agents, signaling through the TLR-4 pathway to promote the production of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β. Autophagy and NF-kappa B play essential roles in mediating these inflammatory responses, with a positive feedback loop between autophagy and NF-kappa B signaling cascade.

Mycoplasma hominis: An under recognized pathogen

Jaweed Ahmed et al.

Summary: Mycoplasma hominis, a potential underestimated pathogen, can cause genitourinary and extragenital infections, mainly associated with immunocompromised patients. Lipoproteins of Mycoplasma hominis play a crucial role in pathogenicity and diagnosis is mainly reliant on PCR. The increasing resistance to antibiotics is a global concern.

The Impact of Selected Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Diseases on Pregnancy and Female Fertility

Summary: Sexually transmitted infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Mycoplasma genitalium are common causes of pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to tubal factor infertility and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Antibiotic resistance in these pathogens is a significant problem, making treatment options and molecular approaches a key focus for researchers.

Sneathia: an emerging pathogen in female reproductive disease and adverse perinatal outcomes

Kevin R. Theis et al.

Summary: Sneathia is an emerging pathogen that can cause adverse reproductive and perinatal outcomes. Due to its complex nutritional requirements and slow growth patterns, molecular methods are typically needed for detection and diagnosis. Evidence suggests that Sneathia plays an important role in various diseases, affecting the health of pregnant women and their neonates.

Ellen H. A. van den Munckhof et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diagnostic algorithm for abnormal vaginal discharge and found that for bacterial vaginosis, combining pH and odor test at bedside with qPCR confirmation is the best approach. The developed algorithm is sensitive, specific, and reduces the need for laboratory tests in 50% of patients with bacterial vaginosis.

NF-κB and Its Regulators During Pregnancy

Fernando Gomez-Chavez et al.

Summary: NF-kappa B is a tightly regulated nuclear factor involved in physiological and pathological processes, controlling the transcription of over 400 genes. Its regulatory role in pregnancy is crucial, as early activation may have adverse effects. Research on the regulation of NF-kappa B during pregnancy, particularly its dysregulation due to pathogens, such as Trichomonas vaginalis and Toxoplasma gondii, is still lacking.
