Comparative assessment of blue hydrogen from steam methane reforming, autothermal reforming, and natural gas decomposition technologies for natural gas-producing regions

A. O. Oni et al.

Summary: Interest in blue hydrogen production technologies is increasing, but a comprehensive assessment is still needed. This study compares the cost and greenhouse gas emissions of three natural gas-based blue hydrogen production technologies and finds that steam methane reforming and autothermal reforming are economically preferable. The study also highlights the importance of plant size and carbon capture rate in determining the cost and emissions of blue hydrogen production.

Integrated carbothermic smelting - Acid baking - Water leaching process for extraction of scandium, aluminum, and iron from bauxite residue

John Anawati et al.

Summary: A closed-loop valorization process, combining carbothermic smelting and acid baking - water leaching, was developed to recover scandium, aluminum, and iron from bauxite residue. The process efficiently recovers iron through carbothermic smelting and recovers scandium and aluminum through acid baking - water leaching. Optimization of the leaching process allows for high extraction of scandium and aluminum, and thermal desulfation enables the regeneration of sulfuric acid and the recovery of the smelting flux.

Metals Production and Metal Oxides Reduction Using Hydrogen: A Review

A. Rukini et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is considered as a clean fuel energy source and a reducing agent for metals production. However, its common use in metals production is still limited. Laboratory studies on hydrogen reduction of metal oxides have provided fundamental knowledge for industrial metals production processes. Recently, there has been further development in experimental approaches, applications, and technologies related to hydrogen reduction of metal oxides. Hydrogen has the potential to recover valuable metals from secondary resources and has applications beyond extractive metallurgy.

Isothermal Hydrogen Reduction of a Lime-Added Bauxite Residue Agglomerate at Elevated Temperatures for Iron and Alumina Recovery

Olivia Bogen Skibelid et al.

Summary: In this study, a new process route was developed to recover iron and alumina from bauxite residue by hydrogen reduction at elevated temperatures. The study found that the reduction of bauxite residue lime pellets was temperature-dependent and resulted in the conversion of iron and alumina to metallic iron and leachable mayenite, respectively.

Microwave acid baking of red mud for extraction of titanium and scandium values

Shrey Agrawal et al.

Summary: The study investigates the recovery of valuable metals in red mud through the microwave acid baking-water leaching process, optimizing the dissolution of titanium and scandium. Key parameters identified include microwave power, acid ratio, and exposure time. The generation of microcracks by microwave irradiation enhances metal dissolution.
