A criterion of rockburst in coal mines considering the influence of working face mining velocity

Haitao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of working face mining velocity on the mechanical behavior of the roof in coal mines. A theoretical model considering roof subsidence is proposed and a failure criterion based on the impending length of the roof is obtained. The concept of roof extension rate is introduced and integrated into the roof failure criterion, improving its accuracy. The insufficiency of current roof deformation monitoring methods and the need for reasonable mining velocity determination are discussed.

Energy evolution characteristics of deep sandstone with different true triaxial stress paths

Junwen Zhang et al.

Summary: Stress path and occurrence depth have significant effects on the energy evolution properties of deep rock. Triaxial tests were conducted to investigate the energy evolution characteristics and distribution process of deep sandstone under different simulated depths and stress paths. The results show that the energy of deep sandstone is positively correlated with the simulated depth under similar stress paths. The energy under one-sided unloading conditions of X-direction stress is greater than that under two-sided unloading conditions, which is greater than that under one-sided unloading conditions of X- and Y-direction stresses. The ratio k of deep sandstone exhibits different trends with increasing Z-direction strain at different simulated depths. Simulated depth is positively correlated with the initial energy storage and energy storage limit of deep sandstone under the same stress path. The pre-peak energy dissipation rate of deep sandstone decreases gradually with increasing simulated depth, while the post-peak energy dissipation rate increases gradually.

An empirical relation for parameter m(i) in the Hoek-Brown criterion of anisotropic intact rocks with consideration of the minor principal stress and stress-to-weak-plane angle

Tao Wen et al.

Summary: This study developed a relation for the anisotropy parameter m(i) of rock strength as a bivariate, second-order, polynomial function of the minor principal stress and the angle between the major principal stress and weak plane. The modified Hoek-Brown strength criterion showed improved ability to determine the strength of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, based on the analysis of extensive uniaxial and triaxial compression test data from various rock types. Further research is needed to explore the applicability of this criterion to additional rock types.

A Unified Constitutive Model for Rock Based on Newly Modified GZZ Criterion

Haohua Chen et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a unified constitutive model for rocks based on the modified generalized Zhang-Zhu criterion. The model is successfully implemented in a 3D finite-difference code and validated through true triaxial tests, with results showing good agreement with experimental data. The model is also used to predict rock displacements in a highway rock tunnel construction, with results matching field measurements.

A simplified three-dimensional extension of Hoek-Brown strength criterion

Summary: The study identifies the effect of sigma(2) on the strength of rocks through true triaxial tests and develops a simple 3D strength criterion. The modified criterion demonstrates a good fit to most rock types and performs better than other criteria in predicting rock strengths.

Stability analysis of wellbore for multiple weakness planes in shale formations

Wanchun Zhao et al.

Summary: A reasonable prediction model for shale wellbore collapse instability was constructed in this study using the Mohr-Coulomb criterion and the multistructural plane strength theory for multiple weakness planes. The results showed that collapse pressure increases with the number of weak planes, leading to a narrower safe drilling window and increased drilling difficulty. The influence of weak plane inclination on collapse pressure is weakened when drilling along the minimum horizontal ground stress azimuth.
