Multifunctional halochromic packaging materials: Saffron petal anthocyanin loaded-chitosan nanofiber/methyl cellulose matrices

Mahmood Alizadeh-Sani et al.

Summary: A novel multifunctional halochromic packaging material was developed by immobilizing saffron petal anthocyanins within a biopolymer matrix, showing potential applications in food packaging. The color of the films changed depending on pH and ammonia gas levels, providing visual color-changing properties.

Cinnamon extract loaded electrospun chitosan/gelatin membrane with antibacterial activity

Soroush Ahmadi et al.

Summary: This study developed chitosan/gelatin nanofiber membranes with sustained release capacity to prevent infection by delivering cinnamon extract (CE) in the implanted site. The incorporation of CE enhanced the properties of the nanofibers, including degradation behavior, antibacterial activity, and biocompatibility. The extract release profile showed a burst release in the first 6 hours, followed by a controlled release in the next 138 hours.

Monitoring freshness of chicken breast by using natural halochromic curcumin loaded chitosan/PEO nanofibers as an intelligent package

Eda Yildiz et al.

Summary: This study developed an electrospun nanofiber halochromic pH sensor film using curcumin, chitosan and polyethylene oxide to monitor chicken freshness. The color changes of the nanofiber film provided an opportunity to detect spoilage by untrained consumers, and the pH and TVB-N values indicated the food quality level. The curcumin loaded nanofiber successfully visualized real time monitoring of chicken spoilage, meeting expectations for quality indicators.

Designing active mats based on cellulose acetate/polycaprolactone core/shell structures with different release kinetics

Adrian Rojas et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of core/shell electrospun mats based on CA and PCL on the release of Quer and Cur, revealing that the CA/PCL coaxial structure could effectively slow down the diffusion rate of both active agents.

The kinetics and release behaviour of curcumin loaded pH-responsive PLGA/chitosan fibers with antitumor activity against HT-29 cells

Minmin Chen et al.

Summary: The PLGA/CS/Cur nanofibers maintained the dispersed state and crystalline form of Cur through hydrogen bonding, impacting thermal stability. The amount of Cur released at pH 2.0 was significantly higher compared to that at pH 7.4. These nanofibers exhibited higher anticancer activity in acidic environments.

Curcumin doped functionalized cellulose nanofibers based edible chitosan coating on kiwifruits

Tabli Ghosh et al.

Summary: The study developed an edible coating containing curcumin that promoted the preparation and application of iron-functionalized cellulose nanofiber-reinforced chitosan to maintain the quality of kiwifruits. This edible coating showed good preservation effects on kiwifruits during storage, improving their color and physiological properties.

Curcumin: A promising bioactive agent for application in food packaging systems

Neda Aliabbasi et al.

Summary: In addition to the inherent antimicrobial activity of curcumin, the medium in which it functions is crucial. An intelligent packaging system based on curcumin/biopolymers can serve as an effective indicator for monitoring the freshness of animal-based protein foods, while polysaccharide and/or protein composite films loaded with curcumin could have valuable applications in the food packaging industry.
