Assessment of risk to humans related to Salmonella from bile on pig carcasses

Lis Alban et al.

Summary: The study in Denmark focused on the risk of Salmonella contamination in pig meat from bile, finding that no samples tested positive for Salmonella. The simulation model estimated the potential oversight of contaminated carcasses if only handled by the food business operator, with results showing a low relative efficacy in focusing on bile contamination to detect Salmonella compared to the current program. The overall conclusion was that the risk to human health from Salmonella in bile on pig carcasses was deemed negligible, and that the current handling of bile contamination prevents contaminated carcasses from leaving the abattoir.

A survey of calf management practices and farmer perceptions of calf housing in UK dairy herds

S. A. Mahendran et al.

Summary: The survey revealed a low level of veterinary involvement in daily calf health decision-making, indicating a need for staff training and the establishment of standard operating procedures for prudent antimicrobial usage. Restricted calf milk feeding is prevalent in the UK, and there is room for improvement in hygiene practices related to calf housing and cleanliness standards.

Long-term effects of early maternal undernutrition on the growth, physiological profiles, carcass and meat quality of male beef offspring

Agusti Noya et al.

Regardless of the breed, maternal undernutrition affected meat color and increased the content of some healthy fatty acids in the meat.

Associations between Feeding Behaviors Collected from an Automated Milk Feeder and Neonatal Calf Diarrhea in Group Housed Dairy Calves: A Case-Control Study

Meridith H. Conboy et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between feeding behavior data collected from an automated milk feeder and neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD). The results show that milk intake is lower during the days surrounding the diagnosis of NCD, and using cumulative feeding behaviors increases the sensitivity for detecting the disease. Feeding behaviors can serve as a screening tool for producers, but visual diagnosis is still necessary.

Animal performance and stress at weaning when dairy cows suckle their calves for short versus long daily durations

A. Nicolao et al.

Summary: Calves in most dairy farms are separated from their dams immediately or within a few hours after birth, which has raised concerns for animal welfare. This study aimed to find a system of cow-calf contact (CCC) that balances the benefits for calf growth and health with the negative impacts on milk production and weaning stress. The results showed that a long period of CCC (9 hours) between morning and evening milkings achieved the best compromise between cow milk yield and calf growth. However, abrupt weaning still caused stress for both cows and calves.

Does the duration of repeated temporary separation affect welfare in dairy cow-calf contact systems?

Natalie Roadknight et al.

Summary: Dairy farm calf rearing systems with prolonged cow-calf contact may have benefits such as improved cow and calf health and better public acceptance, but it can be challenging to manage them together. Half-day separation may offer practical benefits compared with full-time contact systems, although it may negatively affect cow and calf welfare.

Summary: Housing unweaned calves individually in barren environments negatively affects their growth, cognitive ability, and adaptability to environmental changes in later life. This study found that combining physical enrichment and pair housing can further improve calves' growth, while calves' exploratory behavior in novel environments does not contribute to their cognitive performance.

Effects of Social Housing on Dairy Calf Social Bonding

Emily E. Lindner et al.

Summary: This study found that pair-housed dairy calves tend to prefer being with their pen-mate and spend more time near other calves, indicating the benefits of social housing for social development. In contrast, individually housed calves do not show a clear preference between a visually familiar calf or a calf housed elsewhere. The results suggest that physical contact is important for the development of social bonds in young dairy calves, with early life social housing supporting normal social behavior in dairy cattle.

Summary: Footpad dermatitis is an important indicator of animal welfare in turkeys, and automated systems for assessing it can be useful. However, the initial results showed deficiencies in the automated system, particularly in detecting the metatarsal footpad and footpad alterations. The results showed that calves with partial calf-cow contact exhibited lower stress responses to debonding, while abrupt weaning with a nose-flap during full contact seemed to be the most stressful. Summary: Raising surplus calves with their dam may have both advantages and disadvantages in terms of welfare. Dam-reared calves displayed more fear towards humans and engaged in more frequent social behaviors at the veal farm.

Arrival cortisol measurement in veal calves and its association with body weight, protein fractions, animal health and performance

Christien Masmeijer et al.

Summary: Male dairy calves experience stress during transportation to fattening units, leading to high cortisol levels upon arrival at veal facilities. Elevated cortisol levels were associated with chronic pneumonia, while decreased albumin levels were linked to an increased risk of developing pneumonia. Calves were also grouped into low and high-risk clusters based on arrival variables, with high-risk calves having increased odds of developing respiratory diseases and lung consolidation. Avoiding high cortisol levels upon arrival is critical for animal welfare and reducing production losses associated with pneumonia.

Calf health from birth to weaning-an update

Ingrid Lorenz

Summary: Good colostrum management is crucial for preventing calf morbidity and mortality, with immunoglobulins being just one of many important components. Other factors in colostrum, such as leucocytes, hormones, and growth factors, play key roles in the development and maturation of calf immune functions, intestinal health, and overall growth. Practices in the dairy industry, such as early separation of calves from cows and individual housing, can have negative impacts on calf health and welfare, highlighting the need for improved management strategies.
