Reactions of N-heterocyclic carbene-based chalcogenoureas with halogens: a diverse range of outcomes

Marina Saab et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the reactions of chalcogenoureas derived from N-heterocyclic carbenes with halogens and observed a diverse range of reactivity and structures depending on the structure of the chalcogenourea and the identity of the halogen. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that selenoureas are more easily oxidized than the corresponding thioureas, and a correlation between the oxidation potential and the electronic properties of the NHC was found in some cases. Furthermore, the reaction of these chalcogenoureas with different halogenating reagents was investigated, and the obtained products were characterized using NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

The Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction for non-electron-deficient olefins enabled by photoredox catalysis

Long-Hai Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a strategy to overcome the limitation of the Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction, which is restricted to electron-deficient olefins, was achieved using visible-light induced photoredox catalysis. By employing a novel photoredox-quinuclidine dual catalysis, non-electron-deficient olefins were able to undergo the MBH reaction smoothly. Mechanistic studies, including radical probe experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, were conducted to support the proposed reaction pathways.

Nitrogen-Centered Radicals in Functionalization of sp2 Systems: Generation, Reactivity, and Applications in Synthesis

Cassie Pratley et al.

Summary: The chemistry of nitrogen-centered radicals has wide applications in organic synthesis, particularly in recent advances such as C-H amination and the (di)amination of alkenes. The efficient functionalization of sp(2) moieties allows for faster synthesis of challenging structures. Additionally, the reactivity of nitrogen-centered radicals can be harnessed for the rapid construction of N-heterocycles.

Photoredox Generation of Isothiouronyl Radical Cations: A New Platform in Covalent Radical Catalysis

Gaetan Archer et al.

Summary: A new class of cationic sulfur-centered radicals for covalent radical catalysis is reported, generated from highly modular thioureas by photoredox catalysis, making their utilization simple and reliable. The synthetic potential and versatility of the catalytic system were evaluated in a (3+2)-radical cascade between vinylcyclopropanes and olefins.

Selective C(sp2)-H bond functionalization of olefins via visible-light-induced photoredox-quinuclidine dual catalysis

Xin-Tao Gu et al.

Summary: The site selective C(sp(2))-H bond functionalization of olefins has been successfully achieved through a visible-light-induced photoredox-quinuclidine dual catalysis. This synthetic protocol offers a simple operation with readily available starting materials, providing alkenylheteroaromatic products in moderate to good yields under mild conditions. A plausible cascade catalytic reaction mechanism is proposed.

Silyl Radical-Mediated Carbocyclization of Acrylamide-/Vinyl Sulfonamide-Attached Alkylidenecyclopropanes via Photoredox Catalysis with a Catalytic Amount of Silane Reagent

Xiao-Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a silyl radical-mediated carbocyclization method using a catalytic amount of silane reagent under photoredox catalysis, for the efficient synthesis of lactam- and sultam-containing polycyclic derivatives in yields of 63-95% with a broad substrate scope. A reasonable reaction mechanism involving tris(trimethylsilyl)silane as the radical-based reagent was proposed based on control experiments.
