Polycrystalline Diamond as a Potential Material for the Hard-on-Hard Bearing of Total Hip Prosthesis: Von Mises Stress Analysis

Muhammad Imam Ammarullah et al.

Summary: In order to solve the problems caused by polymeric wear debris, metal ions, and brittle characteristic in total hip prosthesis bearing, new material options are needed. The present study confirms the potential of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) as a safe option for hard-on-hard bearing compared to metals and ceramics through von Mises stress investigations.

What Is the Duration of Irrigation? An In Vitro Study of the Minimum Exposure Time to Eradicate Bacteria With Irrigation Solutions

Zachary K. Christopher et al.

Summary: Through experimental research, we have determined the minimum effective exposure time required with common antiseptic solutions to prevent the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Cutibacterium acnes. This helps reduce the risk of infection during surgery.

Efficacy of Common Antiseptic Solutions Against Clinically Relevant Planktonic Microorganisms

Jeffrey A. O'Donnell et al.

Summary: The efficacy of different antiseptic solutions against clinically relevant planktonic microorganisms was tested in this study. Significant differences in efficacy were found among these solutions. Further clinical outcome data are necessary to determine whether these solutions can impact prosthetic joint infections in vivo.

Chlorhexidine in Dentistry: Pharmacology, Uses, and Adverse Effects

Frank Poppolo Deus et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the current uses of chlorhexidine in dentistry and highlighted the most effective protocols that maximize clinical efficacy while minimizing adverse drug reactions. The results showed that chlorhexidine serves various purposes and is primarily used as an adjunct to different treatments. Mouthwash is the preferred medium for preventing gingivitis and maintaining oral hygiene. Chlorhexidine products are commonly used in periodontics and postoral surgical procedures with minimal side effects. The antimicrobial properties of chlorhexidine make it an ideal prophylactic when mechanical debridement is not possible.

High Mortality After Total Knee Arthroplasty Periprosthetic Joint Infection is Related to Preoperative Morbidity and the Disease Process but Not Treatment

Nicholas P. Drain et al.

Summary: Compared to aseptic revision surgery, septic revision TKA is associated with higher mortality, but no specific etiology. As quantified by changes in CCMI, PJI mortality is associated with both frailty and the PJI disease process, but not treatment.

Minimizing Risk of Failure from Ceramic-on-Ceramic Total Hip Prosthesis by Selecting Ceramic Materials Based on Tresca Stress

Muhammad Imam Ammarullah et al.

Summary: The choice of ceramic-on-ceramic coupling in total hip prosthesis offers advantages such as high hardness, scratch resistance, low wear rate, and improved lubrication performance compared to other material combinations. Selecting ceramic materials for such coupling reduces the risk of postoperative failure. This study analyzed commonly used ceramic materials (zirconium dioxide, silicon nitride, and aluminium oxide) for ceramic-on-ceramic coupling and evaluated their stress distribution using a finite element-based computational model. The results showed that using ZrO2-on-ZrO2 coupling reduced Tresca stress by 17.34% compared to Si3N4-on-Si3N4 and Al2O3-on-Al2O3 couplings, which resulted in a 27.23% reduction in Tresca stress.

What Is the Optimal Irrigation Solution in the Management of Periprosthetic Hip and Knee Joint Infections?

Ahmed Siddiqi et al.

Summary: Thorough irrigation and debridement are well-established treatments for periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs), but there is a lack of high-quality studies on the optimal irrigation agent and protocol. Antiseptic solutions may play a role in treating PJI, but definitive clinical studies are needed to compare different additives and protocols.

In Vitro Antibacterial Activity of Hydrogen Peroxide and Hypochlorous Acid, Including That Generated by Electrochemical Scaffolds

Yash S. Raval et al.

Summary: The study found that HOCl has similar activity against planktonic and biofilm bacteria, while H2O2 is less effective against biofilm bacteria. Repeat exposure to electrochemically generated HOCl or H2O2 does not lessen antibiofilm effects.

Shooting yourself in the foot: How immune cells induce antibiotic tolerance in microbial pathogens

Jenna E. Beam et al.

Summary: Antibiotic treatment failure in the absence of resistance mechanisms is often due to bacteria entering a tolerant state, potentially exacerbated by the actions of phagocytic cells. Understanding the immune-mediated mechanisms of antibiotic tolerance may lead to novel strategies for improving antibiotic therapy.

Pursuit of the ideal antiseptic irrigation solution in the management ofperiprosthetic joint infections

Ahmed Siddiqi et al.

Summary: Irrigation and debridement play a crucial role in the treatment of periprosthetic joint infection by eradicating bacterial burden and reducing re-infection rates. However, selecting an optimal irrigation agent remains challenging due to limited data on superiority. Further clinical studies are needed to identify ideal irrigation solutions with optimal bactericidal properties and low cytotoxicity for PJI treatment.
