Therapeutic potential of flavonoids in cancer: ROS-mediated mechanisms

Hasan Slika et al.

Summary: Cancer is a major cause of global morbidity and mortality. Flavonoids are natural polyphenols with established anticancer and antioxidant capacities. They can inhibit carcinogenesis by suppressing reactive oxygen species (ROS), but also induce cancer cell death through excessive oxidative stress. This review explores the antioxidant capacity and pro-oxidant roles of flavonoids, as well as their pathways in cancer prevention and treatment. The review also emphasizes the anticancer functions of specific flavonoids in various cancers and their structure-function relations.

Plant flavonoids: Classification, distribution, biosynthesis, and antioxidant activity

Nan Shen et al.

Summary: Flavonoids are natural polyphenol substances abundant in various plant-based foods. They have significant biological activities in both plants and humans, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, research on their distribution, biosynthesis, and health benefits remains limited. Future opportunities in flavonoid research include biotechnology, therapeutic phytoproducts, and exploring dietary flavonoid bioavailability.

Cancer Chemoprevention: A Strategic Approach Using Phytochemicals

G. Mohan Shankar et al.

Summary: Cancer chemoprevention aims to prevent the occurrence of tumors using synthetic or natural bioactive agents. Numerous pre-clinical and clinical studies have demonstrated the benefits of dietary components as chemopreventives. The toxicity and chemoresistance associated with conventional chemotherapy decrease its success rates, which necessitates the search for more effective and safer alternatives. Chemopreventive agents have been successful in protecting high-risk populations from cancer, and phytochemicals hold potential as candidates due to their ability to regulate multiple survival pathways without inducing toxicity.

Distribution of Phenolic Compounds and Antioxidant Activity in Plant Parts and Populations of Seven Underutilized Wild Achillea Species

Lina Raudone et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the distribution patterns of phenolic compounds in seven wild Achillea species and their plant parts, as well as their antioxidant activity. The results showed that the qualitative and qualitative profiles of caffeoylquinic acids and flavonoids were species-specific. A. setacea had the highest total amount of caffeoylquinic acids, while A. arabica had the highest accumulation of mono-caffeoylquinic acids and flavonoids. The leaves of all studied species had priority in terms of radical scavenging activity over inflorescences and stems.

The Beneficial Effects of Principal Polyphenols from Green Tea, Coffee, Wine, and Curry on Obesity

Tomokazu Ohishi et al.

Summary: Green tea, coffee, wine, and curry have beneficial effects on human health, such as anti-obesity, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and neuroprotective properties, attributed to polyphenols like epigallocatechin gallate and resveratrol. These polyphenols have conflicting actions as both anti-oxidants and pro-oxidants, potentially modulating enzymes and factors related to health. However, human studies have shown inconsistencies in the effects of these foods on obesity, possibly due to various study factors.
